Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Amber color with a nice looking head. Smell is of the malts, caramel, and sweetness. Not quite thick in the body but a little sticky. Taste is sweet with some good malty flavors and caramel.

Bottle. Pours deep orange with a beige head. Sweet aroma with notes of toffee, caramel, apricot and alcohol. Medium body. Flavor is sweet woody and earthy, with notes of caramel, brown sugar and plum. Quite good.

This one comes with the weight of expectation--in my ten years of legality, I have somehow not imbibed this epitome of the genre...lighter brown orange effervescent body... white head is thin but bubbly and symmetrical...sweet, malty aroma with a lesser sense of soft hops... a soft palate with warming effects around the tongue--little fiz--surprisingly drinkable for a doppel... malt is pleasant, not intrusive; in fact, astonishingly tastes like a full-bodied, trumped-up lager... crisp and clean, with sugars appropriately placed... the name may precede itself, but the taste follows through--and I saved this bock sample for Good Friday... "liquid bread" indeed, and a little bit of soul food after a chocolate-free Lenten journey...

Amber with a white head. Sweet caramel flavor matches the sweet aroma, almost like a soda at first. Starts out much better than it finishes, but still a satisfying beer.

Re-rate 5/23/08. Pours a amber color with a decent off-white head that settles down to patches. Aroma is floral with a little perfume, light fruits, and some malt and molasses. Ditto on the flavor although it all seems too light. Finishes a little sour and bitter with the rest of the flavors rather bland. It’s okay but it all seems light and a little unbalanced.

Brown with a low head. The aroma is dominated by caramel and spice, while the flavours are intensily sweet, with malts, syrup, wood and alcohol as main notes.

Nice ruby-amber color and relatively light head of a tan tint. Strong fruitcake flavor and aroma from all that malt, with the slightest amount of hops on the finish.
