donteatpoop (124), Youngstown, Ohio, USA Mar 28, 2008 This was one of the most beautiful beers I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing. It was a deep ruby red that almost seemed to have an light inner glow.
The smell was nothing special, and in no way impressive. A light hint of hops to it, but otherwise unnotable.
Taste was slightly above average, hops dominating the mouth and little else making itself known.
Was a little bitter in the mouth, and I felt that it was slightly over carbonated.
I would not call this beer particularly drinkable, as I found myself really nursing this one.
All in all, not a bad beer; extremely appealing to the eye but not so much to the mouth.
Serving type: bottle jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 28, 2008 Clear amber with good, foamy beige head / Very sweet, malty nose / Medium body, a touch watery, with sweet, sticky body, minimal hops, and decent finish / Simple, sweet spun sugar flavor with a light citrus note / Fine, but rather one dimensional. gringo332 (237), Richardson, Texas, USA Mar 27, 2008 Good beer. head into clear amber body. decent lacing. aromas of sweet malts (mostly caramel) and light hops moelikebeer (219), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Mar 26, 2008 Bottle. Very clear amber pour with a decent head. Sweet malty, caramel aroma. Flavor starts pretty sweet and malty, then has a slightly bitter aftertaste. Medium body, slightly carbonated mouthfeel. Brewsmith (136), Torrance, California, USA Mar 22, 2008 Poured from a 0.5L bottle purchased locally. Deep amber, clear, off-white rocky head, has legs that coat the glass. Aroma is malty, a little sweet, and a little raisin fruity. Malty, rich, a little toasty. A slight raisin fruit flavor from the malt. Just bitter enough to cut the sweetness. Thick, full, but dries fairly well in the finish. The flavors linger, but not heavy.
Overall, a great example of a classic Doppelbock. I love how drinkable this beer is. It is very thick and rich, yet it dries out and is very smooth. McCracken (14), San Francisco, California, USA Mar 19, 2008 On draft, this was a bit of a learning experience. I’d never thought of a doppelbock as a German barley wine, but that was the case here. This might have been a little oxidized (sherry-like melanoidins), but it still came accross as a less fruity, less bitter barley wine. Drier and a little less malty than what I’ve had in most other doppelbocks in the flavor and mouthfeel. A nice beer and even nicer with some spatzle and gravy. mhelgason (495), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Mar 17, 2008 bottle. small khaki colored fizzy (quickly and mostly dissapating) head into clear amber body. decent lacing. aromas of sweet malts (mostly caramel) and light hops (also some light spices present). alcohol is also present. flavor is sweet into bitter that last for approximatley 1 minute. overall pretty good beer. TaxiDriver (910), Stadland, Germany Mar 17, 2008 Bottle. Strong smell of malt and alcohol, very sweet and dark. The head is white and fizzy and disappears fast. Started a little bit sweet, then it gets bitter. Dry and a little bit oily, medium body, flat carbonation. Not as good as the Aventinus.
