Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

12 oz. bottle pours a clear ruby color with a tan head. Sweet cinnamon roll smell. Lightly carbonated with a rich, creamy mouthfeel. Mildly sweet taste of milk chocolate, molasses, spices. Finishes with a spicy alcohol tang. This brew smells way better than it tastes. jan 2001

500ml. red/amber color pours with a brief sandy head. loads of malty sweetness and caramel with a hint of musty hops. clean and malty. brown sugar, earth and a touch of toast that appears just before the finish. noble hops come through to make the finish crisp. very different from most other dopples i’ve tried. it’s the closest to a regular bock. just beefed up. not my favorite but still good.

330 mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto. Pours a clear reddish gold with a decent but quickly diminishing head. Strong aroma of malt and alcohol. First taste is sweet and powerful. The alcohol feels noticeable through the sweetness. I can’t say I drink many doppelbocks, so I suppose my review will end up being more of the style in general than of the specific nuances of this beer witihin its style. Too sweet for these tastebuds.
