Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Pours a light brown with a thin bubbly head that fades quickly. Aroma is of malt. Taste of carmel a little roasty. very smooth, nice. A little too much carbination. Finishes well.

330 mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto. Pours a clear reddish gold with a decent but quickly diminishing head. Strong aroma of malt and alcohol. First taste is sweet and powerful. The alcohol feels noticeable through the sweetness. I can’t say I drink many doppelbocks, so I suppose my review will end up being more of the style in general than of the specific nuances of this beer witihin its style. Too sweet for these tastebuds.

Clear bronze appearance with a medium size off white head and good lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and red licorice with a hint of soy sauce. Earthy, fruity taste, some molassas, slightly nutty, modestly hopped. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering sweetness.

Bottle from GM liquors, Bakersfield; Produced 06/06; Nose of fruity malt, roastiness, and light vanilla; hazy rust clor with a small beige head; flavor is alcohol, (not well covered), raisins, toffee, a little sweetness, and caramel. Pretty good, but I think overhyped!

Had this beer on 5/5/1999. Color is a bright amber with good carbonation and light head. Aroma is a heavy sweet malt scent. Taste is sweet and strong. It starts with a full medium body that goes down with a sweet malty feel. This malt flavor gets strong as the finish comes on with a sharp feel and a medium bitterness. Very tastey brew.

Rerating. Pours copper with small head that dissipates quickly. Scent of pumpernickel & molasses. Low carbonation, medium thickness in mouth . Flavor starts smoky & sweet roasted malts. Ends with a bittersweet chocolate roar which resounds for quite a long time.

Bottled. Nice caramel brown color into my glass, small head that faded quickly. Flavor has a definite caramel and oat like malty vibe. Very nice! (in my best Borat voice). A really good beer even though its not my primary style.

This is the most beautiful DB I’ve seen, having more of an amber copper hue than the usual deep brown. The oatmeal colored head disipates quickly. The nose is typical DB, with malt, smoke, and soy. The flavor is subtle and smooth, sweet from malt, very little trace of the soy, and a dry, smokey finish. Not my favorite style of beer, but in that catagory, one of the best I’ve had.
