Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

pour is dark copper with a very small white head. smell is sweet, caramel, hops why in the background. taste is also a little sweet and then the bitter sneaks in, the sweetness is from honey, and there is a little bit of malt in there also that grows stronger as you drink the pint.

Figured it was about time for me to rate this. Poured crystal-clear coppery orange with about 3/4" of creamy beige head sticking around. The aroma picked up sweet, toasty caramels, floral notes, and lighter herbs.. sweet overall and quite enticing. The flavor was definitely on the sweet side with toasty caramel, molasses, and brown sugar representin’.. bitterness was light and complimentary. Medium-bodied and syrupy on the front of the palate with moderate carbonation pushing it nicely across the palate.. smooth with a shorter, but enjoyable finish.

Sampled @ GDBTF. Pours a lovely garnet red with very little head. Rather strong toffee, caramel on the nose. Rich on the palate, crisp malt sweetness. Hops are minimal until the finish, slightly woody but well complementing the malts. Pretty good doppelbock.

500 ml bottle dated 11/06, so this one has been around. Pours a gorgeous, crystal clear red-brown. Decent tannish head. Aroma is of caramel maltiness. Very nice full body with small-bubble carbination. Taste is malty, some caramel and perhaps molasses, but its leavened by the hops which keep it from being too sweet. The back end has a shot of alcohol too it.

This was a slightly red beer that had a fairly decent flavor. A little sweet, but also hoppy.

Pours a dark brown with a light tan head. Smells of raisins, pepper, some licorice. Tastes of caramel, some chocolate, dark fruit, some pepper, some banana like hints.

12 oz bottle from The Rock...Amber colored with a quickly disappearing head. Aroma of caramel and toasted malts, slightly hoppy. Flavor is the same, caramel malts with a slight hop backbone. Alcohol presents itself as it warms, but not in an unpleasant way. Well carbonated and not too thick on the tongue. Not as complex as a I was expecting (first dopplebock I have tried) but very good overall.

12oz. bottle while in Munich for Oktoberfest. Pours deep red with a super thin white head. Aromas of malt and caramel as well. Flavors of sweet caramel with a sharp alcohol finish. Very smooth, full mouthfeel. Very good brew.
