Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Bottle, from the Dodgy Deli on Cowley Road in Oxford. Red brown, smallish tan cap of foam. Dark caramel malt aroma, along with a healthy dose of cherry flavor. Not actual cherries, more like the cherry syrup that goes on ice cream. Not a bad thing as all. Sweet, plummy malt, a bit of dark bread. Lingering chewy sweetness. Medium bodied--to my taste feels like it would be more satisfying a little thicker. Overall, a very nice drop.

Bold red colour. Strong aroma of malt and caramel. Flavour consists mainly of malt sweetness. Texture is rich and smooth.

Bottle sampled. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel, molasses, dark fruits, and toasted malts. Flavor is moderately sweet and full bodied with toffee, caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of raisins with a clean and crisp finish

Excellent. The first doppelbock I ever drank several years ago, and one I return to often. Great appearance, and flavor -- the molasses in the aroma transfers over to the flavor.

Bottle, poured picked up from the Dodgi’ Deli, Cowley Road, and supped whilst steering a narrowboat on a merry course down the Thames 15-09-07 Dark amber in colour, nice chocolate and coffee on the nose, these aromas unsuprisingly appeared in the taste which was really glorious, bit sweet but there was bitterness as well and other flavours zipping around molassess, nuts to name but two, wish I’d have had another couple of these!

I agree with everything that matt (below me) has stated. I love the malty aromas, with a bit of caramel as well. The color was very pleasing to the eye. For this type of beer, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

330 ml bottle. poured red/amber/copper with one finger of tan head. great roasty malt aromas; caramel, and candy. also some lingering bitterness. flavours are candy sweetness followed by a great bitter finish. very well balanced with perfect carbonatiion. this one surprised me, i wasnt expecting it to be this good.

Poured a clear, bright red, with a tan head that vanished quickly. The aroma was red candy licorice, alcoholic notes, molasses, and grain. The mouthfeel was a bit too watery and much lower carbonation than the usual. The taste is red licorice (which I feel is the combination of the malt and grain flavours combining with some cranberry esters). The beer was slightly warming, but not noticeably high alcohol. An enjoyable beer, but one best served late at night to enjoy alone.
