Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Very beautiful red beer. Strong malty and sweet aroma. Sweet and suryp palate. Alcohol is shown in the end. Appearance and flavor promise a lot but flavor and alcohol in the end is a disappointment.

Poured amber with 1 cm of tannish head. Decent lacing trails. Nose is chocolate and malt. Flavors are amalgamated well with the cocao malt ever-present within a slight cidery backbone. Medium/full body and medium carbonation. Good brew.

This beer was rich. A dark brown/amber color and an off-white head. Heavily malted beer with a strong, sweet finish.

Amber colour with a medium off-white head. Taste is quite sweet with roasted malts, brown sugar and chocolate. Alcohol doesn’t come through too much but it’s still there, leaving a nice warm feeling.

Dark pour with a strong nose of molasses and caramel. Full bodied and smooth with a hint of yeastiness. Overall, a pretty good example of the style.

Bottle. Pours a nice reddish-brown with a large tan head. The aroma is somewhat sweet malt, with both dark and lighter fruits, brown sugar, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is richly malty, with caramel, fruits, and yeast, getting sweeter towards the middle, and with a tinge of bitterness and alcohol in the finish. Full-bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Not the most overpowering or intense doppelbock, but a very well made classic (and tasty!) beer.

I tried this on July 5, 2007 after purchasing from my local LCBO store. It poured a beautiful translucent reddish into the glass with very little head. The aroma was that of malts and fruits (apricotish). The mouthfeel is full-bodied, very smooth and crisp with a hint of carbonation. The taste is smooth with hints of yeast, malt and some sweetness and goes down very well. One of those beers that tastes better at the finish than it does at the beginning. Nothing overpowering. A very nice beer.
