Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Jun 27, 2007 Updated: Nov 24, 2007**Re-rate of a bottle produced on 12/06". Not surprisingly, this beer is noticeably better with a "newer" sample. Similar descriptions, but my initial assessment of the astringency (found in my earlier sample) being due to the beer’s age was accurate. This "fresher" bottle displayed none of those qualities and was quite clean in its finish. NOW I understand why this beer is regarded so highly, by many.
Bottle labeled "produced in 11/05; I bought it last week. Pours a clear reddish brown with a frothy, beige head. The nose is almost candy sweet with notes of caramel and prunes and a faint alcohol in the background. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, creamy and soft with a slightly sour, astringent finish. The flavor is a sweet caramel and prunes with a woody backing and a roasted, lightly sour finish. There is a hint of alcohol on the exhale but nothing significant. A tasty beer, but I have to think the sourness I was pulling from this bottle might be due to its age. I’ll see if I can find a fresher source and re-rate it in the future. VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 24, 2007 330 ml bottle - pours almost a glowing copper-red with a short-lived off-white head. Rich, sweet aroma filled with honey, dark fruits, and sour grapes. Lots of quality dark malts. Mouthfeel is creamy, thick and smooth. Lots of sweet dark malt in the full-body and a port-like character. Slightly alcoholic finish. Wonderfully balanced. Excellent sipping brew. alcamp99 (32), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 23, 2007 One of my favorite styles of beer. Creamy honey aroma. Dark amber in color, slightly sweet full bodied brew. Will definitely drink again. georgekappus (296), Brookfield, Connecticut, USA Jun 22, 2007 Bottle. Pours a deep amber with an off white head. The aroma is full of honey and wheat? Has a nice thick mouthfeel. There is a strong sweet honey flavor and a malty aftertaste. It is almost too sweet like a maibock. tjp68 (31), Washington, Missouri, USA Jun 20, 2007 Orange brown pour with thin head. Malty taste, hoppy finish. Very good beer. joohefner (380), Isla Vista, California, USA Jun 20, 2007 a cherry orange color with a thin fluffy head. has a sweet soy sauce aroma with notes of dark fruit. nice thick body with light full bubbles. has a strong salty malty flavor with maple, toffee, raisins, and a light roasted quality to it. very full and well balanced dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Jun 18, 2007 12 oz bottle. Poured an orangey/ruby color, clear body with very fine carbonation, and a super fast disipating head that only left a slight bit of white foam scattered about the top of this beer. Aroma was sweet, with notes of brown sugar, raisins, caramel and a very slight hint of alcohol. Flavor was actually better then the aroma and came across with loads of sweetness, especially in the aftertaste, hints of raisins and caramel and a nice complexity. Mouthfeel was rather full but yet creamy. Very nice beer, probably would be better on a cold day rather then in the middle of a summer afternoon.
