The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2015 Small bottle. Semi-transparent orange/amber body with a medium head. Aroma has sweet toffee and some faint hints of alcohol. Smooth and light taste of caramel and dried fruit. Covers the 8% nicely, no sharp spikes. Smooth and sweet finish. Despite the high ABV it never becomes cloying or too hot. A true classic indeed. Re-rate: upping the score from 3.8 to 4.1. A high ABV beer that is rich yet easygoing at the same time. Never disappoints.

L: pours a murky brown-amber, highlights, like an oolong tea, small beige head. S: lovely raisins and fig, malty, slightly sweet, brown sugar, a hint of alcohol esters. T: warming malt base that rides from front to back, a little booze warmth with rich malt, sweeter than the nose but with a balancing bitterness. Lovely. F: nicely carbonated, medium-full bodied, easy mouthfeel that’s substantial yet slightly drying, inviting more sips. O: this always goes down really well. Cheap in Japan, warming, refreshing and full-tasting. Great stuff.

From a 330ml bottle on 28/11/2015. Pours a clear amber with a biggish head. The nose is mild but distinctly malty, with chocolate, caramel and toffee present. As expected the flavour is sweet and malty - caramel, toffee, rye bread and nuts, finishing with a very mild bitterness. Full bodied with slightly soft carbonation. Nice stuff.

This is probably my favorite overall beer. Malty, bready, sweet, delicious. To me, this is the ultimate in what a standard ale should taste like. Get it!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Plaisante. Une Doppelbock plutôt légère mais bien maîtrisée. Un bon petit caramel fumé. Sans grande originalité ni défaut.

Deep amber, reddish color. White head, getting small soon. Aroma is malty, little alcohol, sweet. Body is on the heavier side, good maltcharacter. Caramel, bread, creamy. Heavy beer, typical for its style and pretty good.

Aroma: caramel, raisins, a little honey, a little alcohol (not offensive, helps break the sweetness). Appearance: pleasant brown, fairly strong tea; clear; head small and not for long. Taste: sweet, a little bitter; not exactly balanced, but the sweetness is broken. Palate: body full; carbonation average; finish more sweet than bitter. For 7,9%, the alcohol is reasonably well hidden; it’s still clearly there, though. Overall: I’m not too excited about the alcohol, but the beer’s nice, full, intensive, sweet, strong, and definitely enjoyable. Not in huge doses, I imagine, but quite fun once in a while.
