The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Small bottle. Semi-transparent orange/amber body with a medium head. Aroma has sweet toffee and some faint hints of alcohol. Smooth and light taste of caramel and dried fruit. Covers the 8% nicely, no sharp spikes. Smooth and sweet finish. Despite of the high ABV it never becomes cloying or too hot. A true classic indeed.

Amber colour, lasting beige head. Intense aroma of bubblegum, banana, caramel, alcohol, raisins and plums. Starts off slightly sweet, to give way to some unexpected bitterness, with some burnt notes. Finishes with a malty and alcoholic aftertaste. The body is rather heavy, yet smooth. Quite a complex beer, one of the better ones I’ve had so far.

(Bottle) This is a tough one to rate. There’s very little aroma and it’s not very attractive. The taste is really nice but maybe slightly too sugary sweet? I do like it and I think it’s a pretty nice beer, but I feel like it’s missing some dark malt bitterness.

12 oz. bottle from BevMo. Brown-orange color with a pillowy head. The aroma is molasses, brown sugar and toast. No floral hop presence. Just richness, sweet and balanced against the alcohol. Complex, yet subtle, the flavor is dark raisins, burnt coffee, hazelnuts and root beer with an earthy undertone. Slick feel, oily and very smooth with a neutral finish. Paulaner’s got this. Pretty definitive.

Seriously unexpected bubblegum aroma. Are the hops coming out to play on this Doppel? Beautiful malt. Rather ugly to look at, soapy beige. A rather fine beer. I guess they perfected it >100 years ago, so why mess with it. A nice beverage, but plenty of room for it to be a better beer, regardless of style. Nicely dry for a 8% doppel. This would have been epic in the 1900s.

Bottle from Trinkgut in Goch. The beer has dark brown/red color and a nice cream colored head with a lot of bubbles. The aroma is malty, with tones of dark fruits, roasted malts and the sweetness of caramel. The taste is light sweet with tones of chocolate and a little alcohol which makes it really intense. Further tones of roasted malts and some hop notes in the end. The finish is warming by the alcohol and to change in a nice bitterness from the used hops. Wonderfull this doppelbock, one of the best so far.

Bottle. Pours brown with orange hues and white head. Aroma is floral, nutty, cereal, grains, vanilla, fruity, earthy, figs. Taste is medium-bodied, silky, smooth, easy, low carbonation, a bit dirty, bitter finish. Overall, good.

Beautiful brown color with beige foam. Molasses, nuts and cloves in the aroma, very intense. Taste is heavily sweet and spicy. Heavy body and smooth mouthfeel. Very boozy and with a warming finish. Has that special sirupy feeling. Not bad, but I prefer other Doppelbocks. I think this might turn out well when you let it age though.

Beautiful red brown beer. Clear with a big white head. Smell is lots of caramel with subtle pepper, leather. Hint of alcohol. Taste is rotten fruit sweetness with a bitter finish. Bread, dough. Fizzy.

Syrupy, molasses brown-orange color. Fluffy meringue of pillowy head. The aroma is molasses and brown sugar; toffee. Not a lot of hop presence. Very sugary, but it is balanced beautifully by a nuttiness. It’s mild in the nose but good. The flavor is dark raisins, burnt coffee, hazelnut, root beer. Tons of flavor. At the finish, it’s very pronounced dates, with an earthy undertone to them, as if they were just plucked from the earth. Slick feel, oily and very smooth; slides right down the gullet, but has a chalky finish afterward. This is the best Paulaner beer I can remember having: it’s dark, nutty, and challenging.

From the bottle. Aroma is caramel, chocolate bread, and malty maltness. Pours brown with a nice white sticky head. Taste is malty bread, chocolate, toffee and sugar. Nice sweet thick mouthfeel without being syrup. Still one of the best.
