The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

I might have rated this higher, but I had it right after an Aventitus, which is pretty much the best bock out there. This one had a fainter banana smell, and a bit harsher bite to it, but was still a very good sweet and malty brew. It claims there are hops in there but I don’t think they made a dent in the malty power.

Pours clear reddish brown from the bottle. An attractive off white crown forms, albeit briefly. Relatively quickly after the initial pour the beer loses all evident lacing and foam. Smell is malty sweet with no evident fruity notes. The malt aroma has a distinctive roasted tinge. Flavor is sweet caramel and butterscotch. Finish trends alcoholic and leaves a light bitterness behind. Am overall a bit disappointed, it lacks the depth of better Doppelbocks. The German offering from Andechser is much more rewarding and complex. Still, it is quite drinkable. Have it in a quiet moment, after dinner.

Dark amber / brown color. Smells prunes, buckwheat honey, malt and bakery yeast. Medium body with malty focus and quite solid alcohol mouthwash. Hint of caramel in the aftertaste.

Aroma: Dried fruit, bread, caramel, light hoppy spiciness, metal on minimum. Quite pleasant and intensive. Appearance: Head at first high and dense, quickly falls to a small layer, color is deep amber to ruby. Taste: Strong bread notes with some dried fruit, caramel, molasses, some spicy hoppiness, light booze alcohol. Palate: Sweet boozy finish, full body, carbonation medium.

Color copper, no bread when it’s pour by the waiter. Smell of toffee. Some good dried fruit sweetness and very slight coffee bitterness. No alcohol taste despite its 7.9%. A good beer with white sausages!

bottle. Pour is a clear copper with a thick khaki head and average lacing. Aroma is malty as expected. Caramel, toffee, and bread. Sweet but not overbearing. Taste is caramel and toffee with a sour bread flavor that lingers on and becomes more of a glazed, toasted biscuit. Average mouthfeel and a sticky sweetness that lingers. Good beer.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2016 Butelka 0.5l (03.2017).

Pours a clear copper color with a long lasting head with lacing. Smells a sweet grainy aroma. Tastes fruity, malty with a bitter kick. Medium mouthfeel. Overall? Very good with a nicely hidden near 8% alcohol content!

500ml bottle. Clear, copper-ish, dark amber colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Slightly sweet-ish, dark malty aroma with a minimally grainy and strawy touch, hints of malt lozenge, nuttily interludes. Taste is slightly sweet dark malty, minimally dry woody, hints of malt lozenge, minimally grassy hoppy counterweight, chatoyant maltiness alludes to hazelnut, pecan, cola. Very clean, well balanced. Not too heavy, nevertheless effective.
