COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Bottle. Aroma of moderate malt, caramel, sweet alcohol and spices. Hazy amber with off-white head, mostly diminishing. Taste is moderate+ sweet and light bitter, and some alcohol sweetness. Medium+ body, oily texture, avg. carb., sweet finish.

Bottle from the supermarket. I heard that the tap version is quite different. This one is ridiculously sweet. After a strong taste aroma experience (that is hard to describe... the sweetness overtakes it all) a long finish with some bitter pepper and smoke notes follow. Also some booze. The whole combination seems very one dimensional and didn’t please me so much. However I look forward to trying this from the tap again...

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 9A - dark). Bottle 33 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: malt predominant, with moderate Maillard notes (bread crust) and slightly toasty aroma. Some alcohol present with a slight peppery note. APPEARANCE: medium to dark ambar color and clear. medium-low beige head, creamy, with low retention. TASTE: predominant flavor of bread crust (Maillard), toasty malt and a faint caramel-like note. low bitterness with an almost dry finish. no hop flavour discernible. PALATE: medium to medium-full body with a slight velvey texture. moderate carbonation. faint alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a good and traditional Doppelbock well within the style. Does not exhibit optional notes as dark fruits among others.

Pours clean dark amber color with small off-white head. Smell is sweet and very pleasant; toffee, caramel, herbs. Full body with medium carbonation. Thick texture. Bittersweet and somewhat boozy taste. Aroma of sweet malts, toffee, caramel, herbs, flowers, cinnamon. Aftertaste is mostly boozy and combines the sweetness of malts and caramel with burning sensation of alcohol. Very rich and nicely balanced. Overall, great doppelbock. Recommended.

33cl bottle, served in Lagar glass. Pours amber/brown with small white head. Aroma is based on sweet malts, very caramel-ish and licorice forward. Strong licorice taste along with caramel and hints of fruits. Quite sweet on the palate as usual in this kind of beers. Medium body, soft carbonation. Not bad.

Amargor balanceado, inclusive no retrogosto. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
