The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

(Bottle). Large off-white head, mostly diminishing, fair lacing. Clear amber-orange body. Dark caramel, toasted, toffee, medium-high malt sweetness, molasse as well as some light tones of fruits in my nose. In my mouth, medium-high to high malt sweetness first with toffee-like flavor. Later, medium-light sweetness and a light-medium bitterness. Medium body (a bit syrupy), soft to lively carbonation, light alcoholic feel toward the end.

Aroma is roasty malts with deep caramel, honey, molasses, caramel and toffee. Taste is exactly like the aroma. Deep malt flavor. Light earthy hop finish. Appearance is a clear dark amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well.

Rich amber/cider color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of smoky malt, dark fruit, & spice; Flavor of sweet malt, dark fruit, caramel, and some chocolate; Warm alcohol finish; Nicely balanced; Not as rich as other double-bocks - but good overall.

Bottle BBE: 10/15. Lightly-chilled. Pours a clear ruby red body with negligible head. Ripe banana, flour, bubble gum and a little sherry on the nose. To taste: a heavy sweetness counteracted by a moderate sourness and only a slight bitterness. A full-medium body with a slick, oily texture, low-medium carbonation and a lasting finish. The Paulaner description is pretty spot on - this beer is characterized by its malty nature. Maybe not as complex as a Belgian dubbel, but this is a classic in its own right.
