Malty, roasted nose with dried fruit and raisins. Malty, roasted taste with dried fruit (raisins, prunes) and notes of brown sugar. Lots of spicy hops in the finish. Balanced sweetness throughout, smooth body. Very nice balance. Storm (2685), Amager, Denmark
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 4, 2006 50 cl bottle. No yeast at the bottom. Amber clear colour with a small head. Light aroma of caramel and quite malty endeed. Sweet malty flavour with notes of caramel, toffee and alcoholic. Not the best doppelbock I had. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 8, 2004 Solid, but not outstanding German doppelbock prominently featuring the usual sweet, carmely maltiness, with bitterness and hops definitely taking a back seat; Sweetness is perhaps a bit too sugary, but that's a minor flaw; The maltiness doesn't finish well and is on the thin side, with the sugary sweetness eventually bordering on cloying; Higher alcohol content is apparent and is very warming; The abundant aroma is wonderfully malty; Color is reddish copper; Good sized off white head on the pour has good retention and leaves a moderate amount of lacing on the glass PilsnerPeter (2667), Flushing, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 11, 2006 Pours a earthy looking light brown with a fading tan head. Thick roasty malty aroma, chocolate & cinnamon. The flavor is creamy, as well as the body. Rich & viscous character, with a chewy malt flavor of maple syrup, slightly chocolatey, cinnamon and alcohol presence. The finish is long and slightly nutty. Decent flavors, but not all together balanced. Seems a bit syrupy and sweet in my opinion, overrated. Aurelius (2662), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 16, 2002 Smokey caramel nose, with slight overtones of vinegar and wood. Cool label, vibrant orange/rust color with chainmail head which transforms to an inch of spongey foam which persists. Substantial mouthfeel, with an acidic aftertaste. Caramel and slightly metallic flavor, but I may come back and re-rate this on a cleaner palate. Paulaner again comes through with a crafty brew. puzzl (2661), New York, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 5, 2005 Decent orange pour with a small, pretty thin head. Aroma was the highlight, with a good malty fullness and a bit of a sugary, vegetably touch. Flavor is similar but browns out early with little if any noticable hop and pretty much aftertaste. Creaminess on the palate is good and promising but still feels thin for the most part. This certainly is no Ayinger Celebrator DB, which is easier to find, cheaper, and better... I don’t like to mention other beers in reviews but this one seems pretty blatant. Variety is certainly always good though. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 4, 2002 Re-rate 10/04/02: A clear deep amber color, the head is frothy, beige, the lace is thick and clings to the glass till the very bottom of the glass. Nose is malt, caramel, woodsy, and quite pleasant. Start is sweet, the top is medium, the finish is quite dry, acidic, well hopped and a great beer and always in my ’DBF’. Ranks #349 on my current 1000 beer master list. downender (2648), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 4, 2007 500ml bottle. Middling brown with a long-lasting, off-white head. Aroma of toffee and preserved fruit. Flavour began with sweet caramel. This beer tailed-off severely: there was a nasty-metallic edge and the alcohol was a bit harsh. Unbalanced.
