COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Not the best doppelbock around. Brownish colour with a small creamy white mostly lasting head. Aroma of sweet malts. Taste is dominated by the alcohol. Go for the Paulus at the brew pub ...

in the bottle. amber red in color. thick beige head, lasting to the end. very malty aroma. pronounced caramel flavor. nice tip-of-the-tongue bittering hops. I wish this would be the type Oktoberfest beer we will be drinking in Munich, but I know it is not. Even the burps from this beer are tasty.

Pours a ruby red with some darker brown tones and some richer yellow tinges. Very clear though, no yeast in bottle. Head was very small to not existent. When present it was a whitish beige. Not tons of aroma, spicy though, with some hops and maybe a little dry malt aroma. Begins dry and somewhat bitter but quickly explodes with a big spicy fruit flavor with sweet orange, tart cherries and a mix of light toffee and saltwater taffee adding a lightly chewy texture. The carbonation level is not too bad and adds to the texture. Has some yeast flavor to it and definitely a dry hopped flavor I wasnt expecting that was pleasant. Very spicey throughout, though as it finishes the taste leaves too quickly. This beer was well balanced and the body tastes very flavorful with lots of bursting fruity malt flavor in your mouth, but overall, is a bit dry and ends unremarkably. A lot gentler than both Schneider Weisse and Celebrator. Dosent kill you with sweetness, that was a plus and does not seem overly alcoholic. I do not see a cloying or even a very sweet finish that others talked about.

A: The pour is a dark copper color with a fizzy sand colored head that quickly fades away. S: The nose starts of bready and mildly sweet with some slightly overdone toffee. There’s a bit of sweet banana as well as a subtle spice (clove) character. T: Toffee is again the primary contributor of sweetness with a surprising amount of bitterness for a doppelbock. There’s a fair amount of (spiced) bread and an underlying earthiness. M: The body is medium with a medium level of carbonation. Fairly smooth on the palate. D: Not my favorite doppelbock. As it warms the alcohol begins to become more noticeable, but it’s still good enough.

Have had from a 12oz bottle and on tap. A nice rounded and balanced double bock with a sweet finish. One of the best examples.

Picked up this bottle at Chevy Chase in DC. Served in a pilsner glass. Pours a moderate brown color with a bit of a copper hue. There is a single-finger light tan head that sticks around for a bit before falling and leaving a bit of spotty lacing. The nose is pretty plain with a bit of sweet malt, bread, and caramel. Nothing too much in addition to that, and even those are pretty faint. The taste follows along the same lines--there really just isn’t that much going on and I’m not impressed with the complexity of this one. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a bit too much alcohol in the finish. Drinkability is okay, but nothing I’d seek out again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-24-2011

Draught at 42nd Street Oyster Bar in Raleigh, NC. Murky reddish brown color with thin off white head. No lace. Malty aroma full of dried fruit and alcohol. Flavor is rich and complex including figs, port, caramel, and brown sugar. Sweet, very slick and oily with a warm alcohol effect at the end.
