Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Dark amber; sweet malty aroma w/molasses, marmalade, and earthy undertones. Zippy alcohol notes and lemon candy lead into a sweet, brown sugary middle. Gets thick and cloying at the end.

The aroma is of intense caramel sweetness. Flavor is dominated by the caramel, but there’s also some german hops, smokiness, and a bit of alcohol. Relatively crisp. Overall, a very good beer.

500ml bottle from Cask & Glass, Tonbridge. Clear russet colour with lasting beige head. Strong dry malt aroma., almost to the exlusion of everything else. Smooth in mouth. Lots more dry malt on the finish with some herby hop. Coo, didn’t realise it was 7.5%. Nice, but a little one dimensional i.e. lots of dry malt. Some dry choc towards the end, like a cheap supermarket own brand plain chocolate bar. Herby hop on end lends a bit of balance.

Bottled (BB 02/2006)
Dark copper brown, big creamy brownish head, lace. Malty, ryeish, shapr, almost metallic aroma. Malty, burnt sugar and bread in flavor, some brown sugar and burnt molasses. Quite industrial dubbelbock. Hides alcohol quite well. (4/4/4/3/11 2.6)
Re-rated, bottle (BB 10/2007), alc. 7.9%
Clear amber color, decent off-white head. Toasted malty, slightly sugary aroma. Very balanced malty with notes of toasted grains and rye, light fuityness. Light tickling alcohol, malts and sugars in the aftertaste. Warming and balanced. (6/4/7/4/15 3.6)

Mahogany with a nice head. The aroma has notes of malt and hops. The mouthfeel is smooth. The initial impressions in the flavour are sweet and malty with notes of dark fruit, but then comes a nice bitterness along as a good counterweight. It’s a smooth and nice doppel-bock, and my husband is very fond of it.
