Poured a burnt orange colour with a rocky 1.5 cm head that settled quickly, leaving a little lace. Aroma is of hard candy, toasted malt and toffee. Medium-to-full body with an oily mouthfeel. The flavour is malt-driven, with sweet toffee-like notes, some fruity acids and a big slug of rummy alcohol in the finish. Needs a cold night to be at its best. Alcohol is too prominent for my palate. (330ml bottle, best before April 2005) wunderbier (1271), Tampere, Finland

Creamy and off-white, the head is not mountainous, but it matters not. A simple aroma of dark bread, boil caramelization, honey and dried flowers belies the commercialization of this beer. A robust sweetness and tender bitterness are frustrated by malapropos acidity. Unfermentable sugars furnish a copious body and glutinous texture, but the mouthfeel is set back by aggressive carbonation. A go-to grocery store beer but it’s soul has been eviscerated...</font> heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 28, 2002 Thick and malty. Quite satisfying. Not my favorite style but reasonably well done. Tons of caramunich maltiness. I had hoped the finish would be a little less sweet. OlJuntan64 (1267), Perth, Australia
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 13, 2003 Glorious medium-dark amber clear with large lasting yellow beige head. Lively woody hops and carmel malty sweet with hint of yeast and alcohol in the aroma. Full smooth low carb body. Big almost lusicious nicely lingering toffee sweet bready malt flavours dominate until a medium bitter less sweet finish and aftertaste kick in. ABV is pretty well masked with all that sweetness. Probably more suited to a colder season but nevertheless a very good example of a Doppelbock. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

A rich malty aroma sweet caramel and bread notes some alcohol. Flavor was a sweet with both caramel and a sweet bread note. Nice smooth drink, mild but noticeable alcohol presance . turbo (1254), Arizona, USA

strong sweet roasted malt flavor like a stout..
a bit to much alcohol for my taste on the finish,,this would be good once in a while but not more than one. WISEGUY572 (1252), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 18, 2009 Draft in Singapore ... not exactly where I expected to have this first. Good nose of malts and chocolate. Appearance moderate brown, small head, tanner head and lighter body than I expected, since my standard for this beer is the Ayinger. Ditto, smaller mouth than I expected. Taste of sweet malts and caramel and floral hops, with, maybe a touch of coffee, but none of the huge roasted malt coffee and chocolate bitterness of the Ayinger.
