Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Bottle (330ml). Poured a startling brilliant ruby-orange, hazy and bubbly, with a very quick diminishing off-white head, absolultely no lacing. Aroma ligthly malty, some sour wine, strong orange juice, some yeast, ash, wood and leafiness. Taste is fairly woody and fungal, with more strong orangey maltiness and some hops to make it less sweet - a bit of sourness, tannins and burned candy too. Extremely flat and lifeless mouthfeel knocks it down a peg or two. Not really a summer beer.

Cold fall in Ontario, I am a bit sick my self ... Well this is my number 600. Nice clear amber color with white thick head that sadly did not lasted to long. Aroma of sweet cherry wood with addition of raspberry. Nice and warming. Warming and intense flavours. Alcohol blended well with caramel, creamy, a bit nutty. Nice for cold windy fall season.

Orange red color, medium head. Very malty and robust. Complex flavor, rich and flavorful. Malty and somewhat appleish and nutty. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is malty. There is some alcohol bite, not to harsh. Nice beer.

April 2007. Dark amber brown body, moderate beige head. Malty aroma has a bit of alcohol presence. Flavour is similarly quite malty, lots of caramel malt flavours. Booze is restrained, but quite prominent on some sips. Not super complex, but has a very pleasant simple sweetness that was quite nice paired with a beer and molasses basted ham. Serving chilled mitigates the alcohol presence somewhat. Shared by Tuqueboy. 7/3/7/3/15 - 3.5 <P>December 2003. Dark amber colour, not much in the way of head. Aroma and flavour are malty. Finish was lackluster. A pleasant but unexceptional doppelbock that may have not have stood up well to the chocolate I had had not too long before. Will have to try another one now that the LCBO is carrying bottles of this. 5/3/6/3/13 - 3.0

Bottle. Pours a brown body with a tan head. Nutty sweet malt, hints of licorice, and alcohol latent fruits. Good with a nice warming to finish.

Re-rate 12-07-2007 Large creamy like beige head that mostly lasted. Clear sparkling body with a mahogany color. Good display of lacework. Aroma was heavy bread, nutty, toffee, light fruit, almost a hint of liquorish, somewhat toasted malty notes as well. Medium bodied with an average carbonation and somewhat thick texture. Lovely moderated to heavy sweet malty base, maybe a hint of bitterness. Rye bread sweet and lingering finish. This beer is just so drinkable. A really solid Doppelbock. Strong taste and long bitter finish. Red/brown appearance with a lot of malt and nutty aroma.6-3-7-3-14 (10-03-2006)

This brew pours a very nice malty caramel aroma from a transparent light brown body with a medium head of fine to medium sized bubbles. It has a slightly fizzy initial mouth feel followed by a very nice smoky, slightly burnt, chewy full bodied spicy flavor. This is one of my favorite brews of all time. Next to Andechs, it was my favorite Doppelbock while I was overseas in Germany. Its high alcohol content can be felts even after just a few sips. It goes down very easy. I love it!
