4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DenisLD (87) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 29, 2010
The bottle I had is actually aged for almost 2 years (2008 release). I’ve had this beer fresher, and I’ve got to say it has improved with age.
Reddish-brown body with a thin creamy light-brown head, just a little cloudy.
The taste is more complex than before, it is quite woody, with strong hints of vanilla, toffee, and an intense breadiness. I even tasted a good amount of fruit notes, like cherry and plum (the latter is very pronounced). There is some nice sweetness both in the taste and the finish.
Nice and crisp on the palate, medium-to-full body to it. The alcohol is fairly masked, for a 7.9% beer. Drinks easily.
All in all, this remains one of the original and best doppelbocks. I highly recommend aging it for a year or two (disregard the best before date), it’s worth it!

Beer has a nice golden color and smells pleasently of malt and spices.
It is a highly drinkable beer despite its heavy malty body.
Hops are nice, but don’t forget the malt y’all!

Great dopplebock. Not overly sweet like a lot of dopplebocks. Great caramalization and overall taste.

Bottle. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it poured a light copper colour. Both aroma and taste were stronger than expected but very good overall. Can taste some darker undertones in this beer. Maybe some darker malts. 7.9% ABV is a bonus.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 seymour (608) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - OCT 25, 2011
Tasted from bottle into tulip glass. Poured a dark reddish brown color with chill haze and creamy beige head, somewhat lasting with fine lace. Aromas of bread, biscuit, toast, roasted barley, very faint flowery hops and fruity yeast esters. Extremely complex malt-sweetness only partially subdued by a flavorful hops bitterness, tastes of biscuit, caramel, molasses, nuts, raisins, plums, black currants, cranberries, sour cherries. Banana, citrus, and clove phenols increased as it warmed. Heavy body with full, "chewy" mouthfeel. Lingering bittersweet and fruity aftertaste. The very standard for the doppelbock style. Entirely delicious.

Bottle.
A - Clear amber garnet color with an average sized foamy off-white head with average retention and a good layer of foamy lacing.
S - Sweet caramel and apple malt with some bready smell. Some nutty smell and a subtle touch of alcohol. Lots of sweet malt.
T - A lot of sweet caramel malt. Also a good amount of apple, pear, and dates. Some nutty flavors, but it doesn’t really bring an earthy taste along with it. A touch of spice is also present (mostly cinnamon like). Toasty flavor in the middle of the sip. Finishes with a slightly tart berry/dark fruit taste. Also a touch of warming alcohol on the finish.
M - Slightly above medium body with moderate carbonation. Quite smooth and fairly refreshing.
D - Good drinkability. Of course it is a touch sweet and pretty malty, so you have to be in the mood for that, but it is fairly balanced and not cloying. Easy to drink and although there is a slight alcohol warming, the alcohol taste is hidden quite well.
Notes: Solid doppelbock. It didn’t necessarily blow me away but it was very nice. A lot of malt and sweetness. Definitely recommend trying this, especially if you are in the mood for a full, malty beer.

Strong sweet malt aroma. Brown sugar. Maybe some fruit. Very nice. Appearance is a dark brown with a hint of orange. Taste is sweet. Very nice. Not cloying. Earthy herbal hops present. Hint of banana maybe apple. Slight roastiness. Palate is medium. Nice malty sweet with a bit of roast and hidden fruit lingers nicely with excellent aftertaste. Overall this is a very nice beer. Great drinker even at this ABV. The best of the style IMO.
