3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a gin clear amber with a super thin off-white head. Some carbonation..no lacing. Aroma is fruity, with hints of bitter-sweet chocolate malts. Flavor is consistent with the aroma, with a touch of alcohol (brandy/port). Palate is light-med bodied, slighty water and slick. Overall a very enjoyable, highly drinkable dark lager.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
A - Pours a clear copper with red highlights. 1.5 finger tan head.
S - Lots of rich toasted caramel, almost like caramel melting in a pot, musty wheat bread, musty yeast, over ripened apples, sugary figs, nutty.
T - Toasted bread, fruity malt, caramel, alcohol does not hide, grassy bitterness shows up along with some dry nuttyness.
M - Full and slick, but drys out on the finish. Adequate carbonation.
The aroma is better around 52 degrees. After that the alcohol really pounces on things. The flavors were good but fell flat of what the nose describes.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Body is a clear amber, head is minimal. Nose is spicy with notes of bready malts and some hops. Taste is sharp and spicy, leaving a long lasting bitterness and warmth. Alcohol taste is a bit too pronounced. A somewhat one-sided but nevertheless decent beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The grand dad of the double bocks. Not the best of the style, but still one of the best, and its flaws actually makes the good parts better. A bit thick on the pour, and a bit overall bready, accented by a nice blend of noble hops and thick sweet malt.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A bottle that poured an amber color with a tan head. The aroma was exceptionally sweet with taffy & caramel notes. The flavor was fruity with plums, caramel, quite sweet & reminded me of iced tea... I also got figs or dates. It’s really sweet but smooth but has some booziness to it, pretty good and at a nice price. It went very well with some camembert cheese.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured into a 16 oz. snifter.
Pours a medium amber-brown with a small, white head that fades away quickly. Aromas of strong, sweet tea, cherry Kool-Aid and a moderate scent of alcohol. Taste is fruity sweet and bitter right up front. I don’t notice much complexity or change between the initial taste and the finish. I also don’t detect any toasted or caramel flavors that I am accustomed to with other doppelbocks. That aroma of cherry Kool-Aid is also present in the flavor. Alcohol presence is above what I consider normal for a doppelbock with a bit of a burn. A bit hoppy, too. Mouth-feel is right; medium to full bodied with carbonation very low.
If I were judging this beer by its accuracy to style, I would give it a low rating; it lacks the many of the attributes that a doppelbock should have and possesses some that it shouldn’t. However, it is still a very tasty brew that I’ve bought many, many times and will again.
