3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pour from a 12oz bottle. Inky dark brew with two fingers of tan head. Aroma is a mixed bag - delicious dark chocolate and rich coffee, but also hints of sour fruit that combine unpleasantly with the burnt roasted grains. Its a ’gotcha’ that pops up in the early swallow and impinges on what would be an others most excellent aroma. Taste is sweet roasted malts at the start, burnt grains simulating chocolate and a nice strong coffee flavor. The oatmeal lens a richness that emerges mid swallow and conveys the overall sweet / roasted / burnt flavors. The palate is both rich and light, exceptionally well balanced. Finishes remarkably clean and dry with just a whiff of lingering roasted grain and dark coffee flavor, but with just a tad of the sourness that impinges on the aroma. A really first rate brew.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle, undated, served in a snifter at about 55F.
This Oatmeal Stout pours nearly black. A bit of sediment remained in the bottom of the bottle after a full pour. The dark tan head has decent retention and leaves decent lacing.
The aroma has a bit of unattractive burnt and sour components with the dark roasted grains and hints of dark fruits. The oatmeal is evident in the flavor and soft feel. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate add to the flavor which is, as expected, dominated by dark roasted grains. Minimal burnt grain but a touch of smoke and some very dark roasted grains here. Low hops.
Feel: Soft, low carbonation. Near full bodied. Creamy smooth.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy milk chocolate, light vanilla, and faint dark chocolate. It pours a dark brown with faint orange highlights around the edges of the glass. It has a small khaki head that quickly fades to a thin film. The flavor starts with a quick dose of moderate dark chocolate. The finish has vanilla black coffee, light black licorice, and a hint of burnt notes. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation a slightly oily mouthfeel.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a near black. Small tan head. Mild roasty aroma. Flavor of mild coffee and chocolate. I wouldn’t call the body thin (a negative), I’d call it light. Even with the lighter body it has a nice chewiness to it. Slight bitter in the mouth feel. This is one of those solid beers that is better overall then the sum of its parts. Not one particular aspect that wows you, but I really enjoyed it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; black with foamy beige head. Smells and tastes solid; oatmeal and dark malt with notes of roast and chocolate. Good on the palate too with a fairly dry finish. A good example of the style.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap sample. Poured a dark brown color with an average brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium complex dark toasted chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted chocolate sweet flavor with a medium to heavy toasted dark chocolate sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a solid brew.
