THE GREAT WHALE OF CHINA! Not sure who brought this, but this is an awesome tick to get. Clear medium brown in color with just a tiny off-white head. Big barrels on the aroma, all barrel really, with some caramel and sherry. The flavor is like a barrel aged sherry watered down, with very little of the base beer coming through. Caramel and molasses. Rather light in body with fairly low carbonation. Not sure what to think of this. It’s a little strange.

Thanks to spycow for bringing out this treat at DLD 2011. Having Pabst headquartered in the town I was born in, I’ve wanted to try this one since its release. Thanks for delivering, Chris. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pours a moderately-light copper color with a pretty good white head that falls pretty quickly without leaving much lacing behind. The nose carries some notes of the barrel character, though that portion is a bit faint. Contradicting myself, there is a more-prominent wood character as it warms, as well as some slight caramel. The flavor brings a bit of light caramel and toast plus the barrel. Light to medium body with some barrel in the finish. Interesting, but not exactly my cup of beer. Thanks again. Courtesy of Toby, thanks man! Pours clear copper with thin white head. The aroma is smooth and sweet smelling with caramel malts, wheat bread and some prunes. The taste is similar with spicy oak that resembles spicy hops as well as caramel malt like sweetness and prunes. Smooth and easy drinkin’.

Yes, the elusive oak aged PBR from China emerges- bottle thanks to Toby. It is in every sense marketed to be exclusive and high quality. Odd though, the whole thing reveals a above average beer that is disguised in phoniness. For example, there is a weirdest huge cap that looks cool, but it opens to reveal a twist off aluminum cap- like those on 40s! Anyway, the beer is a bright amber color with a small white head. A very pleasant nose of oak and caramel. The flavor is a smooth fruity and dry mix, some caramel and oak. Actually well done, but not simply oak aged PBR- this is a whole new beast.

Bottle provided by Chris for our NYE tasting...Medium copper, clear, light off white head good, good looking...The aroma is very sweet, syrup, corn, light skink, a little hint of oak...The taste is also really sweet, but somehow successful, especially in relation to what my expectations were. Sweet corn and oak on the front, a hint of vanilla too. The finish really shows off rubbing alcohol though, hurt drinkability. A rare tick for sure and its actually decent for a ba Chinese pale ale. Not worth the almost $50 price tag, but I’m happy.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 750 ml bottle. Oak-aged. Deep, dark, amber-orange with a thin, lacy head. Fruity, caramel / toffee nose, with chocolate and some dry, earthy hops. Light oak flavor, with some vanilla, lots of caramel and toffee. A bit of earthy hops, just enough to cut though the sweetness. Just stops short of cloying. The light oak is a nice touch, and the malts are quite tasty.
