COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark deliciousness is named after the gumbo dirt of the Des Moines River bottom which nourished our Peace Tree and is now used as the surface for Knoxville’s famous Sprint Car track. Instead of using traditional ale yeast required of a stout, a Belgian yeast was used to add complexity. This stout is brewed with high quality pale malt, three roasted malts and two caramel malts. The dark roasted caramel malts contribute to the chocolate and toffee characteristics. Three varieties of hops contribute to the bitterness and aromas of this beer.

Aroma and appearance are great. Taste is of strong caramel malt. I’m tasting some flavor of wax beans or green beans. A spicy finish that does remind me of Gumbo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very basic model. Not overly anything. Hint of chocolate. A good stout to introduce someone to if they've never had them.

Bottle. Blah. Nothing special. Very watery, no bite. Tasted like dirt, albeit a decent sampling of dirt. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A: The beer appears a deep brown hue, bordering on blackness. The beige head is approximately a half inch thick at the onset, and settles to a thin layer within a few minutes. S: The aroma brings roasted malt (slightly burned), light coffee, grain. T: The flavor is underwhelming. The Belgian yeast strain just comes off as odd, and doesn’t integrate itself gracefully into the overall presentation of the beer. The roast character is bordering on charred / burned. The coffee presence is healthy, but could be fresher tasting, and more aromatic. M: The feel is thinner than I would prefer in a stout. I would be more tolerant if the beer was exceptionally creamy and the drinkability was high, but alas, this is not the case. D: This is my second offering from Peace Tree. While I found the Double IPA surprisingly delicious, I was considerably less impressed with Black River Gumbo Stout. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-01-2011

Roasted malts and caramel in aroma and flavor. Thankfully the Belgian yeast didn’t ruin this, it was mild; this was a pretty good stout that wasn’t taken down by odd and out of place flavors.

Bottle. Pours black with a foamy brown head. Nice molasses aroma with roasted malt and coffee, along with some brown sugar. Taste is more coffee and malt. Dry finish. A bit thick, but nice.

5/2/11. 12oz bottle courtesy ekoerper. Opaque dark brown pour with a HUGE brown head that cuts fast but sticks a little and laces a ton. Milk chocolate and roasted malts on the aroma with a small amount of sour. Bigger sour on the flavor with a kick of chocolate and roast. Very similar to their imperial stout... and also not great.

Bottle at Matt’s tasting. Pours a deep auburn, dark brown with thin beige lacing. Aroma is a bit faint but has nice notes of dark chocolate and oats. Flavor is more prominent. Good blend of coffee and licorice with some toasted grains. Light and slightly syrupy body with a grainy finish. Pleasant and subdued overall.
