Late summer brings some of the best in local produce and Joe has made the best of it with Cornucopia, his farmhouse style ale brewed with Iowa Sweet Corn. This was one of the first brews he made last year to appeal to the locals around Knoxville and it was met lots of enthusiasm. Originally, it was informally called Iowa Corn Beer. Over a couple of pints last spring as we were planning our fall, the name Cornucopia was thrown out, probably by Joe, and it stuck. It’s catchy, fun and a little silly. But don’t let the name fool you, this is a beer that serious beer people love!

Bottle shared by John at my house. Pours cloudy gold with white head. Nose and taste of cornstalk, creamed corn, sweet corn, dry grain, earthy hops and herbal notes. Body on lighter side of medium.

I’m not sure this deserves the designation of saison. Golden and clear with a thick soapy white head, but the aroma and flavor lack any real spice, little citrus and a mild corn sweetness.

22 oz bomber from HyVee, Ankeny, IA. Label also mentions brewing south corn stalks, also a good fermentable. Slightly toasty sweet corn nose under the cap. In the glass, more corn and malt Saison sweetness, with a bit of fruity esters and wheat malt. Cloudy yellow beer under a thin, transitory head. Taste is sweet, of course, mostly from the malt. The corn, of course, adds to the alcohol, but does not overdo it. Dregs of yeast in bottle add just a little bite at the end. Flirts on the edge of being cloying and "hot". Very likable result of trying different fermentation.

Bottle - good size foamy head, dark gold color, yeasty peppery spice aroma and flavor, not as sweet as expected malt backbone, mild fruit notes, even better than expected overall ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bomber from pepsi. Poured a chill hazed straw yellow with a smaller to averge tight foamy white head. Aroma is light spice, corn husk, vanilla muffin, grains. Flavor is pretty much the same. Medium to fuller milky body with softer to perhaps average carbonation. Meh.

Bottle. OMG, I don’t like this one at all. Clear golden-yellow pour, no head to speak of. Weird corny, chemically thing going on here. Not my thing, and that is all.

Clear, dark gold pour with a thin white head. Aroma is grainy and sweet, planty corn, dry fruit, some bready and light earthy funky yeast. Flavor is reheated corn on the cob, toast, bready yeast, weird spicy heat (maybe a little fusel alcohol) and a little cereal and planty, herbal hops to the finish. Medium body with a syrupy, oily feel and medium carbonation. Better than I was expecting from the deScription, but not really my thing, very corny.

Hazy gold with an off white head. Smells like fancy feast cat food!!! Taste is better, sweet corn, spices, and more fancy feast at the end. Medium body with good carbonation. Yummmm...cat food

Bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Pours pale yellow with no head at all. Nose is lightly spicy, pale malt and a bit of corny graininess. Lightly fruity. Taste is about the same, with some mineral notes, light spice and a long grainy finish. Real interesting in the mouth...kind of sticks to the tongue.
