12 oz. bottle. Dry and dusty aroma features scents of coffee with sugar, brown sugar, raisin, pumpernickel bread, Brazil nuts, and peanut dust. Pours a very dark brown with a medium brown to amber hue. Small to moderate amount of beige head. Nutty, dry taste features flavors of mocha and rye bread. A touch of sugary sweetness. Not spicy, as some rye beers are; more of a dry, roasted, nutty, umami taste. Light to medium body; maybe a bit watery. Smooth and soft in the palate. Reasonably complex and interesting, but these aren’t my preferred flavors and aromas.

Very dark brown pour and a nice beige head. Very roasty flavored beer. Bitterness hits a bit followed by some nice spicy rye notes. Not bad at all.

Bottle from Johns. Dark dark brown with lasting head and a little lace. Mild spicy woody hop aroma. Mild chocolate raisin sweetness balances with spicy grainy woody hop bitterness. Carbo is a little sharp. Decent enough.

Bottle from Johns grocery. Pours black with a thin khaki. Nice roasted malt on the nose. The roast is predominant on the tongue with the rye sliding in more on the finish. It’s interesting but it feels like the rye and the roasted malt are competing with each other more than complementing each other.

Bottle. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Medium roasted malts, hints of dry chocolate, light Belgian yeasty notes, and light flowery hops in the finish. A hint of the rye malts lingers as well. A little busy, but pretty good nonetheless.

Bottle in Minneapolis picked up at John’s Grocery. Pours a brown appearance with a light brown head. Some veggie, chocolate, light caramel, a bit tangy aroma. Slight candy, burnt malty, chocolate, a bit spicy, tangy flavor. Scroll past.

Sampled at Repeal of Prohibition fest 2013 at Schlafly Bottleworks - Pours dark nut brown with a tan head. The aroma has cocoa, rye, hints of nuts and an overall smoothness. The body is fairly light and crisp with prickly carbonation. The taste begins with dry cocoa, spicy rye, pepper and a bit of powder. The finish is very dry and chalky. Pretty nice porter.

Sampled at the Schlafly ROP 2013. It poured a cloudy amber-brown color with a small off-white head. The aroma was of chocolate, roasted malt, mint, rye and some grass. The taste was of cocoa, roasted malt, grass, nuts, and caramel.
