COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
High quality pale, carmel, chocolate and Munich malts get a boost with roasted and chocolate rye. Dark and Light Belgian Candy Sugar is added to the kettle during the boil for smoothness and flavor. Belgian yeast gives off some fruity esters and the brew is delicately hopped so as to not overpower the malt flavors.

12oz bottle from Johncy’s Liquor Store in North Liberty, IA. Pours a black body with a finger-width, frothy, dark brown head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is chocolate with a nice rye spice and roast. A touch of coffee and earth with a bit of a nuttiness. Flavor is similar. Rye spice and roast forward with a solid dark chocolate backing. A bit nutty with come coffee and a touch of smoke. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with a solid rye spice, light coffee and roast, earth, and a nutty dark chocolate malt backing. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid porter. Really nice rye spice accompanying the roasts, earth, and dark chocolate backing. Well balanced and enjoyable.

jcr (1956) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - SEP 8, 2012
Bottle. Deep brown body with a short, frothy beige head, diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, rye, caramel, molasses, coffee. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Strong malty/rye taste with coffee bitterness. Dry finish. At the same time it’s right on the edge of being harsh, ashy.
