There was a time when alcohol was forbidden in America, creating a void filled only by the times’ most daring entrepreneurs. For this unique beer, we’ve proudly joined forces with Templeton Rye Spirits in Templeton, Iowa and their famous prohibition-era whiskey. Aged 12 months in Templeton Rye casks, this red ale hints of whiskey, vanilla and oak. Drink inconspicuously or boldly share it with friends.

Red light head. Some lace. Wisky aroma, sweet caramel malts, a little barleywine ish but not hoppy. Some stale or oxidized malt aroma. Wisky in taste, some dry woodiness, sweet malts but overpowerd by a dry kind of tartness, alcohol notes. Its kinda like a shot of wisky in an amber. Im not a wisky drinker but it ultimately reminds me of my Grampas basement when I was a kid an sneaking around in his liquor bar and smelling all the bottles he had. Good amber and barrel age forward if you like that. Not getting any Belgian funkiness like the rest of their beers so this must have a neutral strain of yeast. Not getting much vanilla though which I was looking forward to ,just caramel malts.

Large format bottle. Pours a dark red with quickly disappating head. Aroma is whiskey, vanilla and wood. Taste is similar, dry and woody. Pretty solid, sweet caramel comes in late.

Bomber at binkies. If you like rye whiskey, this is your beer. I am a fan of this but not for everyone. Templeton lingers, thankfully. Great combo, will check in with these guys more often. Cheers!

Tap at Up Down in Des Moines. Deep reddish brown hued beer. It was $7 for a small glass. Boozy woody nose with notes of caramel. The tastes was tons of Templeton and old wood. There is some note of something like mineral oil throughout each drink. Meh, one of Peace Tree’s weaker efforts. Nothing to balance out the barrel aging, the beer is just lost.

Pours a deep reddish amber, with a respectable head that sort of fizzles out into a little wispiness on the edge of the glass.

The aroma is nice, floral, sweet and caramely but not in that rich heavy way at all. It’s got a good dose of whiskey on the nose… almost smells like a whiskey sour cocktail with some maltiness thrown in there…. cool.

The flavor is barrel forward in the similar way that a lot of these Peace Tree treatments are. I actually remember this being sweeter, maltier, and less whiskey forward last time I had it a year and a half ago on draught, although this does have some nice maltiness that does balance out the whiskey flavor better than a lot of these treatments do. It ends up tasting a good bit like a well mixed whiskey cocktail, again… with some malt… neat.

On tap at GTMW 2013. Amber with a microscopic off-white head. Sweet aroma of bourbon, oak, vanilla, tobacco and caramel. Hops need not apply here as I pick up pale malt, bourbon, vanilla, oak and caramel.
