22oz from Sam’s, Durham, on the recommendation of BBQ. Glad I took my man up on the tip, because this one is - particularly given its relatively nice price - a pretty good entry in the still extant craze. Oily, inky pour with mild sediment and a big creamy head. Nose of sharp dry hops and anise. Mouthfeel is full, almost luxuriant. Taste is very dusty and dry, and a bit spicy, almost like a black saison even though still hoppy as balls. Good one.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Intensely roasted flavor almost burnt charcoal. The hops are relatively muted. A bit different for this style but not bad.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very nice fresh hop aroma prominent with spice, pine and fresh grass. Black with ruby/brown highlights. Thick tan head which rains down at pouring. Taste is rich with hop character but not overwhelmingly bitter. Some of the roastiness of the dark mounts comes through as well but still leaves center stage to the hop oils. Not particularly alcoholic. More malt on the finish. Moderate body. Sticky lips when finished. Lots of the dark malt left far into the finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My bottle [660ml] shared with HogTownHarry, jerc & mabel. Pours a very deep ruby, almost black, with an average size diminishing frothy beige head. Aroma of green leafy hops and roasted malt. Flavour of roasted malt, leafy hops and a roasty, very bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. I’m not crazy about this style of beer but this is alright.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
The aroma is grassy and has a slight burnt malt quality. The taste is like metallic insecticide which is ironic for an organic. The appearance is dark brown. The palate is thin. Overall I am really disappointed.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
22oz bottle. black but not opaque with a medium, creamy, tan head. aroma is all hops with the only the faintest hint of dark malt. flavor brings forth notes of licorice, burnt meat, dark chocolate, bitter citrus/pine hops. palate is medium with medium low carbonation. not a bad beer...pine and chocolate don’t really do it for me though.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(22 oz. bottle from Damon’s) Very dark brown. Tall tan head. Aroma is sweet citrus and pine over dark roasty coffee, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Very smooth, lightly oily palate. Droopy, broken, dabby lacing. Flavor is sweet and hoppy, dark and caramel-roasty. Real good.
