Growler. This is what a berliner weisse needs to be. Pours pale pink, with a nice frothy head. Nose has tons of tart grainy elements with big fruit influence from the raspberry and a bit of astringency and rind come through from the limes. Flavor is out of this world, so sour and so damn balanced with the fruit. The raspberry is noticed first as it lends a semi-sweet hand to the affairs, and the lime is so awesome in the finish. Intensely drinkable, intensely sour, and just an amazing amazing beer.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2010 Pours a hazy straw yellow. Nose is huge lactic acid, hints of sour fruits, big citrus punch, funk and hay. Flavor is super tart citrus, sour lactic acid, sour fruits, funky, sweet fruit on the back end. My mouth is watering writing this. SO sour. So good. Awesome! Fantastic sour beer. Way more sour than any other berliner I’ve tried.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2010 The standard Peg’s Berliner with the addition of Lime and Raspberry. A: Pours a somewhat hazy yellow with tones of red showing through. No head at all. S: Nice aromas. I loved the standard version and the kicked up version is unique for sure. Tart citrus, wet straw, and a bit of grainy bread. T: Holy citrus. Tons of very very tart lemon. Mild tones of powered lime gatorade. There is just a touch of grain. The raspberry don’t really stand out, but I am sure it has added to this bold sourness I am enjoying. Hints of wet straw with a nice acidic bite. M: Rather light in body. Rather tart from start to finish. D: Another awesome offering by Doug. For a guy who just started playing with sours he is doing a real nice job. Tons of flavor and tartness packed into this little beer. On the upper end of beers when it comes to sourness. The fact that it is a Berliner is quite impressive. I would love to have it on draft during the hot summer months. Who needs lemonade when you can have this. Update returned to Peg’s this weekend and Doug pulled out Batch 2 of this gem for me to try. All I can say is wow. He improved on an already great beer. The Raspberry has been ramped up with this batch. The tart with mildly sweet notes of raspberry really comes through. It melds wonderfully with the lime, lemon, and slight brine. He took a great beer and knocked it out of the park. I was blown away this time, and my rating will reflect such.

Had this one draft at Cigar City. Pours a hazy straw yellow with a small white head. Nose is sour as hell- lactic acid, vinegar, some malts, sour fruit, and tartness. Flavor is similar with astringent finish, sour fruit, vinegar, and general tartness. Very refreshing and even more enjoyable. For a berliner-weisse, it is mind-blowing and sessionable. I could drink a slew of these.

On Draft at Peg’s for their 100th Batch Celebration. Pours a murky red/pink with a medium clean white head. Aroma is sour grapefruit, florals, and pomegranate. Flavor is sour grapefruit, slightly vegetal/tomato hints similar to the Bloody Berliner but not to that extent, white grapes...great flavor, not overly tart or acidic at all. Light medium mouthfeel, slightly puckering and super refreshing. Man this is a fantastic beer...This is one of those beers that I would be satisfied drinking every day.

Cloudy gold pour. Aroma is sour and fruity. Citrus, and warheads. Flavor...wow what a punch for 3.9%. Sour has hell, fruity, full flavored. I taste the berries and citrus with a huge and delicious sour attack on my tongue. Well done.(had at RBWG)

Growler… This beer rocks!… Cloudy, straw-colored ale with a few, flimsy, fat bubbles. The nose is fruity and as acidic as all get-out – lemons, limes and lacto heaven. The flavor is flat-out sour (even when warm) and moderately fruity with notes of lemon, lime and berries. The sour finish dries way out, but remains sour. World class beer!

Sampled at DLD 2010. Big, sour aroma. Limes and some graininess. Flavor is very, very sour. Almost tongue numbingly so. Really, really good though. One of the best Berliner Weisse’s I’ve ever had. Slick palate. Glad I got to try it.
