4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from a growler into a snifter.
My pour of Rare D.O.S. looks like it may be a little bit light on the carbonation. The beer itself is pretty much black, with dark mahogany and ruby edges where a bit of light can sneak through. Just a tiny wisp of a mocha cap rests around the edges of the glass without the ability to leave lace.
The aroma comes on strong and smooth. Creamy chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, and smooth bourbon.
From the first sip it is not hard to tell why this beer has received such high praise. Throughout each sip there is a smooth bourbon presence from start to finish that starts slow and never goes over the top. The Palm Ridge whiskey integrates itself well with each flavor component of the base beer. Creamy chocolate makes the beginning of each sip taste like fudge. The roasted malt has its own sweetness and brings some coconut, vanilla, and molasses. Toward the end of the sip, the growing oak presence combines with a bitterness in the base beer to create a slightly astringent flavor.
As expected, the carbonation is a little bit lighter than I suspect was intended. What carbonation is there is light and creamy, which allows the beer to really mellow on the tongue and lets me feel the full weight of the body with each sip. There is a sweet stickiness after each sip.
This is definitely on my list of beers to go back and have again, especially fresh, if it becomes available.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle at FoCo Stout Tasting 2013, courtesy of Armin. Thanks man! Pour is deep brown with a small tan head that quickly dissipated. Tangy, fruity, pears, green apples, raspberries, cocoa, and sour aroma. Taste is dark fruits, licorice, tangy, tannic, apples, pears, and blackberry with a medium sour finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really a tragedy - another infected mess.

Growler @ Armin’s palace, courtesy of arminjewell. Thanks! Pours a black appearance with a thin dark head. Dark chocolate, anise, raisin, a bit fruity aroma. Tangy raspberry, vinous fruity, vanilla, dark chocolate, a bit boozy flavor. This is one of the infected growlers, unfortunately. Not horrendous.

Black beer with a brown lacing.
Aroma is awesome, reminds me of the KBS: cream, vanilla, dessert, chocolate, rum and raisin. One awesome aroma!
Flavours of vanilla, cream, earth, roast, chocolate, wood, light coffee.
Aftertaste is vanilla, wood, chocolate and earth.
Low carbo, silky mouthfeel, full body and an oily texture.
Lovely beer! Yum!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
THX! for the sample of this gorgeous rarity. This originated from one of the growlers that Mikkeller & To Øl @ Borefts 2013. I didn’t get it from the stand, I managed to get RareR there but missed this one. I have heard from pretty much everyone who has ever gotten hold of this one that their growler was infected & this was no exception. It didn’t taste terrible or anything but this was clearly not what it should have been. I have absolutely no idea how this beer managed to get its reputation. Huge local pushing? Or is it mind-blowing at the source? Black with a mocha head. Smells lactic (yeah) with bourbon, vanilla, sweet, chocolate, caramel, coffee,… Lastic taste, high carb & a bit thin body but still very enjoyable with its notes of vanilla, molasses, caramel, touch coconut, sweet caramel, coffee, faint roast, light warming spirit. Flat, spirit. It must be noted that even despite its condition this was till very enjoyable. Luckily the RareR was in good condition.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle thanks to Craig. Unfortunately this was infected. Pours a jet black color with a medium white head. A light roasted malt and barrel nose, sourness pushing in. The flavor is dominated by sour ashy malts, not acidic, but the dominant sourness ruins the flavors. Some barrel shining through. Not good. I’ll happily re-rate.
