4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 KickInChalice (842) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 4, 2012Poured from a growler into a snifter.
My pour of Rare D.O.S. looks like it may be a little bit light on the carbonation. The beer itself is pretty much black, with dark mahogany and ruby edges where a bit of light can sneak through. Just a tiny wisp of a mocha cap rests around the edges of the glass without the ability to leave lace.
The aroma comes on strong and smooth. Creamy chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, and smooth bourbon.
From the first sip it is not hard to tell why this beer has received such high praise. Throughout each sip there is a smooth bourbon presence from start to finish that starts slow and never goes over the top. The Palm Ridge whiskey integrates itself well with each flavor component of the base beer. Creamy chocolate makes the beginning of each sip taste like fudge. The roasted malt has its own sweetness and brings some coconut, vanilla, and molasses. Toward the end of the sip, the growing oak presence combines with a bitterness in the base beer to create a slightly astringent flavor.
As expected, the carbonation is a little bit lighter than I suspect was intended. What carbonation is there is light and creamy, which allows the beer to really mellow on the tongue and lets me feel the full weight of the body with each sip. There is a sweet stickiness after each sip.
This is definitely on my list of beers to go back and have again, especially fresh, if it becomes available.

Draught @ Mikkeller, Viktoriagade. Pours black with a good lacing thick creamy light brown small head. Aroma is coconut, dark sugars, cocoa, vanilla, roasted malt, fudge, dark chocolate, sweet licorice and flowery hops. Taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter. Body is full, texture is viscous/creamy, carbonation is soft. Finishes quite sweet with lingering coconut, vanilla, roasted malt and flowery hops in the late finish. A very delicious dessert. If you fancy thick, black and sweet beers you ought to seek this one out. I easily fancy this one over RareR.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 phredrik (988) - Copenhagen (formerly Aalborg), DENMARK - MAY 23, 2013
Tap @ Mikkeller & Friends. Looks the same as RareR, slighty brighter head though. Aroma is fresh - tea leaves, dandelions are surprisingy the most forward notes up front. Must be the wood creating a pretty unique connection with the medium roast malts, giving these brighter notes. Interesting and very delightful. Huge malt aroma unerneath - chocolate, liquorice, molasses, oak, vanilla, and maybe even tangerine! Despite the heaviness, my overall impression of the aroma is actually bright and flowery. Taste is more in the lines of what you would expect from a barrel aged imperial stout - thick body, huge roasted malts with chocolate, molasses and salty liquorice, a huge viscosity and lots of residual sugar. Everything is surrounded by a subtle bourbon note, which is actually a more spicy than sweet bourbon taste - almost like a rye whisky. Hides the alcohol much better than its rarer sibling. This is a really unique beer, beautifully done in every way. What a stunner!

Shared by yourefragile. Thanks Mike!
The beer is brown with a nice looking head and spotty lacing. The aroma is quite complex, bringing coconut, whiskey, vanilla, oak, toffee, roast. Amazing flavor. Just incredibly smooth, wonderfully complex, and no heat whatsoever. Terrific balance. One of the best barrel aged stouts I have had. World class.
