Growler from the release. Cheers to my friend who secured this one. Pours a nice obsidian color with a dark tan head that recedes. Nose is roast, ash, some light coconut, some rum, and some vanilla. Flavor starts with out with dark chocolate, earth, roast, rum, some mild fruit, and some wood then moves into lots of spirit, then finishes with with mild rum that borders on boozy then excuses itself into a polite exit leaving just a hint of rum. Medium in body and delicious overall.

I enjoyed this beer, though the rum taste is powerful. Pretty sure he ages it in small 5-10 gallon barrels (which I heard sends out a lot of boozy tastes). I love barrel aged beers, and he does a great job on these.

Draft on tap at Peg’s Cantina (Gulfport, FL). Woot! Pours a nice pitchblack thicker pour, dark and dreary, good legs with a frothy light brown head atop, dies to a film and laces ok. Aromas are rum, oak, and roast. Firm spirit, toffee, and cocoa. A bit roasty, ash. Initial is fuller bodied, rum and cocoa, roasty with some toffee, toast, and gentle spice, brown sugar, and warmth. A bit tannic. More dry and spirit laden, the barrel makes a more impressive show here. Dryness, bitterness, vanilla and oak. Some spirit, roasty and dry backend. A touch of red dried fruit, roastiness, cocoa, caramel and spirit. Warmth, toffee, and cocoa. Rum, brown sugar, touch of vanila. More spirit, oak, and toffee. Dry, tannic backend. The vanilla version softens this. An impressive beer, it really depends what you like more. I prefer the vanilla.

On draft at Peg’s. Black pour with a small creamy tan head. Rich cocoa, coffee, spicy rum, molasses, burnt sugars, dark fruits and vanilla in the aroma. Great marriage of flavors, chewy chocolate, vanilla, molasses, licorice, wood and spicy rum. Low carbonation and booze well hidden. Very tasty beer.

500 ml swing top growler from JasonR - thanks again, Jason! Pours a deep chocolate brown, not totally opaque on the edges, with a tiny tan ring. Not much carbonation going on, which is to be expected after a few months in the growler. Aroma of vanilla, coconut, lots of oak, caramel, chocolate, earth, and warming rum throughout. Also just a hint of a metallic note. Flavor of chocolate, caramel, oak, a lot of rum, molasses, burnt sugar, dates, and toasted nuts. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation and a mouthfeel that seems to be thin and quick but ends up coating and warming the palate. Love the aftertaste (afterburn?) here. Nice rum barrel stout. I need to get a hold of it fresher next time.

Tap at the brewery. IMO this is best in show in a night that included Rare DOS, Rare Vanilla, Fast Breaker, Nooner, Coffee Vanilla, and Fixie. Still black pour that coats the glass as it touches the edge. Aroma of rum and French vanilla ice crew. Taste is very similar. Sofa king good. Full in the mouth. Delicious.
