Reviewed on 03-12-12 at Peg’s.

Pours black, mocha head, thin collar, spotty lace, wisps. Nose is smooth booze, chocolate (milk/dark/bakers), light caramel, excellent level of rum notes in there too. It’s very easy to pick out the rum version versus the regular Rare DOS and it’s cool to have them side-by-side. Flavor is rum, chocolate, vanilla, burnt sugars, excellent barrel character. The booze is just oh-so-smooth and enjoyable and just to my liking. I think the rum adds something else to this beer instead of taking away from the base Rare DOS. Really just outstanding stuff. Full, rich and smooth, nice subtle carbonation, creamy finish.

I have to say, this is slightly better then Rare DOS for me. The rum barrel really adds another layer to this beer, even though I didn’t think it was possible. Not sure if I’ll ever have it again, but hey, my fingers are crossed!

Lukaduke (2374) - Portland, Maine, USA - NOV 28, 2014
Pours a smooth black umber color with a finger of khaki foam. Nose is a mix of sweet chocolate, earthy roast and layers of coconut, spiced cola and a hint of licorice. Palate follows the nose with nice integration of rum and stout flavors. Body is a touch thinner than expected but still has a nice mouth coating viscosity. Solid.

22oz bottle shared thanks to Lukaduke! Pours dark brown black with small tan head. Nose is a combo of boozy rum spice and vanilla oak with fudge and dark chocolate. Taste is creamy, dark rich chocolate truffle and some rum spice notes, cinnamon, soft oak, touch of booze, raisin. Finish is bitter dark cocoa with some earthy ashy chocolate cake and dusty rum soaked oak. Layered and very well done. Really enjoyed this one.
