this beer was pretty good on tap to start, but the growler is coming into its own now, quite outstanding

At common table with Colin, Jacob, Justin, and friends. Pours black with a hint of lacing. Aroma is huge pungent rum, smooth roast, a complex and authentic sweet note that almost reminds me of double barrel huna. Taste is same as aroma is. I really like this, but it burns a little too much.

On tap. Smell is all rum. Comes out black with a nice tan head. Taste is very smooth. A nice balance of the richness and the barrel. Easy to drink for such a strong beer. Comparable to BA Zhukov. Just as good.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2014 Thanks Matt for sharing. Thick black, not much carbonation. Thick and chewy. Rum is very well balanced in this big sweet stout. Really enjoyed it.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2014 Nice stout, chewy body, super sticky some vanilla and light toffee. Not a lot of harsh acrid roast, not bitter. More sweet. Really good

Growler thanks to hopscotch: Poured a dark thick brown with thin light brown head. Aroma was thick rum, chocolate, and vanilla. Taste was super rich with chocolate, loads of wood and rum gave this beer plenty of burn, roasted rich malts added to the backbone.

On tap at Barrel aged beers day 2014 at Peg’s Cantina. Black. Aroma is lovely - vanilla and spirit balance. Taste not as interesting or lovely - rum comes through mildly and vanilla even less so. Not uber exciting. As warms vegemite extract flavour comes through more. Finishes on this and mild malt bitterness. Not mind blowing.

*Moving over my old review*
Scored one of these in a trade, decided to share it with foofaa after a random trip to Philly.

A - Pours black with a small film of head, quickly dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving no lace down the glass.

S - Smells of rich chocolate fudge, vanilla, coconut, caramel, toffee, oak, dark roasted malt and spicy rum. Not as much spirit as I was expecting, leaving plenty of room for the base aromas to shine through.

T - Starts off with the fudgey chocolate and smooth vanilla sweetness quickly being joined buy the toffee, caramel, oak, coconut, dark roasted grains and spicy rum bring it all together. Finish is a mix of sweetness and dark roast, combining with some warming booze to linger long after the finish. This is a really well put together beer.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth feel goes a little watery toward the end of the glass. Booze is well hidden, only really coming forward as it warms up to room temperature.

O - Really solid BA stout. It didn’t blow me away by any stretch of the imagination but it really made me want to try the regular Rare DOS. Hope I have that chance one day as I am pretty sure I am going to love it.

Bottle @ Armin’s palace, courtesy of markwise, thanks! Pours a dark brown appearance with a thin dark head. Tangy fruity, berry, vinous, roasted malty aroma. Tart, raspberry, blackberry fruity, chocolate, a touch smoky flavor. Unfortunately, this one is also infected, pass.
