Commercial Description:
You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout...Bad Santa has arrived. This mysterious dark elixir is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas. The toasted malt and roast character blend seamlessly to the alluring citrus and herbal hop aroma that comes from copious amounts of Ahtanum hops.

Pint and sampler tray at the brewpub. Appearance is dark brown, nearly black with a solid off white head and really good lacing. Aroma is full of earthen hops and black malt along with a light bit of citrus hops. Taste was toasted malt, spicy earthen hops, citrus hops and light caramel. Very tasty brew, one of my favorites from this trip up the coast.

Holiday Ale Fest 08... Poured deep brown with a light brown head. Roasted, malty aroma. Flavors of hops, and cocoa-malt that all rounded up in an earthy and leafy, dry finish.

Green Dragon meet the brewer night. Pours dark brown with a small khaki head. This beer was really good, nice soft roastiness that paired off against the earthier hops. Balanced and smooth, lingering caramel and chocolate that trails off in the finish.

Draft @ Pelican. Pours a dark cola color with a light reddish tinge; light tan head with patchy lacing. Pleasant amounts of roasted malts, coffee, and light dried fruits in the nose; malts take center stage here, oddly enough. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy dark malts, coffee, and basic pervasive bitterness; certainly not an IPA by anything I can taste, and closer to a light-bodied porter, but a good light-bodied porter; is this aged from the original batch? Lengthy finish: doughy / toasty malts, light roasted notes, and a touch of coffee; on the dry side.

I found this "black IPA" to be quite delicious. Unfortunately, I can’t recall the intricacies of the flavor of this beer because I tried it at a festival and didn’t have pen handy. However, I do remember that it was malty and had an impressive level of bitterness. Also, that I really enjoyed it.

At Holiday Ale Fest 2007--A black IPA with a wispy white head. Citrus and fruit-filled nose with a roasty malts presence. Full bodied and super complex. Another wonderful offering from a wonderful Oregon brewery.
