Bottle from LetsPour.com that I received as a gift. Dark brown in color with a fluffy two finger head that retains very well. Aroma is sweet, roasty, and chocolatey with a citrusy, earthy hop presence. Smells very hoppy, but not in a way that makes me think it will be bitter. Taste caught me a little off guard. Somewhat fruity and sweet, it tastes a little bit like dish soap, and for some reason that doesn’t seem like a bad thing. I didn’t get the hop flavor and bitterness until the aftertaste, but it does pack a small wallop. The finish is dry and lingers, like a bite of unbuttered pumpernickel bread. Intriguing. I find myself quickly going back for another sip to see what else I can taste. Very intricate compared to most of the other BIPA/CDAs I’ve had.

Bottle, brought back from Oregon. Roasted malt aroma with notes of citrus and pine hops. Pours black with decent light brown head with pretty good retention and very little lacing. Starts with strong roasted malt flavors with a but of caramel. Finishes dry with the citrus and pine hops taking the lead. Good black ipa.

22 oz bottle. Aroma: roasty and malty, with hints of coffee and toffee. Taste/Palate: sweet and crisp; finishes creamy and slightly bitter and astringent.

Poured from a 22. Nice dark color. Looks very inviting! Aroma is a bit roasty with hints of pine. Flavor is not a roasty as I expected. Definitely has a sweetness to it, berry-like. Has a bitter yet creamy finish.

A very strong dark ale. Upon opening smells immediately of whiskey. A nice dark complexion with little head and a good sweet aroma. The flavor is so strong of alcohol that it is tough to palate. Not my favorite of ales.

Decent malt flavor. If it was a bit stronger it would help a whole lot. Still good.

Bottle at Frank’s Pad, thanks to Frank, 10/11/14. Black with a good sized tan covering that retains very well. Nose is liqourice, spice, dark malts, light charr, earthy hops, dark toffee. Taste comprises pine, bitter grapefruit, charr, spice, earthy hops. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with earthy hop bitterness. Ok CDA.

Earthy, dank hop aroma. Earthy/dank hops prominent in flavor as well, mild sharp citrus is noticeable but stays in background. Malt is very dry, dark-roasty with a hint of astringency. Different in a good way as long as you’re not looking for fruity/citrusy hops in your black ipa.

Tap at Pelican Brewing in Tillamook. Pours black with light tan head. Aroma is pine, malty- caramel- not too much aroma. Taste is bitter throughout, medium carbonation, medium to low carbonation. Overall, okay.
