COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This special, once a year beer is produced with 420 pounds of freshly picked, "wet" Sterling hops from Goschie Farms in Silverton, OR. The hops were only 3 hours from the vine when they went into the kettle. The mash tun was also used as a hop back, holding 300 pounds of hops!!! This beer features a huge floral, spicy, grassy aroma with a firm malt background and a huge, snappy hop finish. Produced using one malt, one hop variety, one yeast and pure coastal water, this is truly an elemental beer. This years version of Elemental Ale was inspired by Nigel Tufnel and his amp that goes to eleven, and to celebrate Head Brewer Darron Welch’s eleven years of brewing at the Pelican Pub & Brewery

Draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear gold with a small white head that laces the glass. Aroma of grapefruit, grass, pine, and pale malts. The flavor hits all the same notes. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a mildly bitter mouthfeel. Solid APA but I preferred the Silverspot IPA I had alongside it.

Pale golden-straw colour. The aroma is softly spicy and fruity. Fresh and grassy with a bit of light herbal character. Lemon and herbal flavour. Lovely and clean. Assertively bittered.

2011 - Plenty of that fat green foliage of which I’m not the biggest fan, but enough lemon, pepper and grassy hop notes to make it stand out among this year’s crop of ’Fresh Hops’. Light and spritzy. Good toasty malt backbone. Well balanced.

My favorite Pelican brew of the night. There’s not much to add other than it’s hops, hops and more hops. Very "green" fresh hops. I’d love to score another bottle of this.

Bottle:   Amber, slight haze, bits of sediment float about, large frothy white head, nice lacing.   Fresh floral nose, hoppy, soft citrus peel and pith.   Nothing but uber fresh hoppy goodness on the tongue.   Its like hop juice, straight up, without too much bitterness.   Soft floral and citrus notes on the backside.   Really impressed with this one, very flavorful without being overly bitter.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly full bodied.   Finishes with loads of hop goodness.   I would sum this up as extremely fresh, a bit floral, some citrus peel, and just a whole lot of hop flavor.   One of the better (if not best) Pale Ales I have had in a while.

Bottle (2011, fresh). SMASH beer with Sterling hops and Oregon 2 row (and ALE yeast according to the website). Pours with a very minimally hazy yellow body with a large and lasting white head with good lace. Aromas are : FRESH, FRESH, FRESH! Very dank, spicy, herbal. TONS of papaya, some very fresh passionfruit, light esters. Some spicy herbal hop notes as well. Complex and all over the place. A bit bready and grainy malt bill. Flavors are all hops: floral, spicy, strong papaya fruit notes. Sterlings taste like this?! A bit grassy too. Light bready and crackery malt bill. Some light toasted notes (vienna perhaps?). Lively bubbles, very dry and light bodied. Raw (like many SMASH beers), but very interesting with it’s cleanliness and complexity.

Pale yellow beer, hazed, with a small white head. Appears fresh hoppy with flowery, piney and rosemary notes. Ureum, dry hopsacks or -bales, Hessian sacks. Light bodied, but very gristslick. Nice, if a bit unihopdimensional, exaggerated for a Pilsener.

Bottle #9 from Belmont Station 2011 with Carla. Pours golden with pure white foam. Smells sweet, crisp and spicy. Tastes of grapefruit, with plenty of bitterness.

Sample at Eugene Fresh Hop Festival. Poured the color of straw with a white head and a lot of carbonation bubbles. Aroma is a lot of pepper and floral hops, pretty spicy aroma all in all. Flavor is also very spicy and grassy, with a little bit of biscuit malt to provide a modicum of balance. Not my favorite style of IPA, but still a well crafted beer.

2010 Vintage. Bomber served in a tulip. Pours clear light golden with a large white head. Great retention and lacing. Aroma is as advertised: peppery, spicy, grassy and floral with a bit of funk. Light-medium body. Bitter flavor though not overblown. Oily texture thats also a bit fluffy, and a green, bitter finish that sticks. Minimal sweetness througout. My first fresh hop brew of the year, and a good one. This is a pale ale rather than a pilsener.
