Drink a beer, save a butterfly!

Silverspot IPA holds a permanent slot in the Pelican lineup with its brilliant gold color and assertively complex hop aroma. Brew Master Darron Welch selected the blend of Sterling, Fuggle and Meridian hops, focusing on herbal, floral, spicy and tangerine-like characters to create this highly drinkable 6% abv English-Style IPA.

Silverspot IPA celebrates the Oregon Silverspot butterfly which once flourished in coastal grasslands from Washington to California. Due to habitat loss, this threatened butterfly is now found only in a handful of protected areas. The Oregon Coast is home to most of these sites including nearby Mt. Hebo and Cascade Head, which can be seen from the patio of the Pelican Pub & Brewery. Oregon Silverspot butterflies depend on a unique ecosystem of coastal grasslands, with caterpillars feeding on violet leaves and butterflies drinking the nectar of flowering plants. A collaborative habitat restoration and reintroduction program is helping to increase this butterfly population. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beer will help fund conservation efforts for the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly.

Golden color with very little head. Aroma is some malts and light citrus. Taste is citrus and biscuits. Nice but uneventful. Would be perfect for a session.

Bottle from Brewfest. Clear light copper with fluffy head and lace. Mild spicy hop aroma with very mild fruity citrus sweet hop. Mild toasty malt with fruity melon peach sweetness and mild spicy non-descript bitterness with a hint of lemon. medium-light body. Forgettable but good enough.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Light copper in color. Bready hop nose with some grapefruit. A little sugary sweetness as well. Medium body, with a moderate hop profile. Pretty balanced malt/hop combo.

12 oz bottle, thanks brenn79. Bottled 9/12/14, maybe a little over the hill. Aroma is bready, perfumy, earthy. Pours hazy orange with a collapsing off-white head that leaves a ring of big-bubbly foam; laces a little. Taste is caramelly sweet (not cloying) before finishing on a bitter, savory note; biscuity, earthy, herbal flavors. Highly carbonated, medium body. Not bad for being this old.

Pours slightly hazy old gold with a nice creamy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, spice, bready and malt. Taste is caramel malt, yuk, the date on the bottle is 9-12-14 dammit! Tired of outdated beer being sold on shelves, do any stores care about selling fresh beer? The beer still isn’t a total waste, it has a crisp clean finish and a nice mellow bitterness. Fresh this could be decent.

(bottle) hazy deep golden colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of heavy caramel and resin, slightly musty, with some notes of orange peel, straciatella yoghurt and herbal hops. flavour is more caramel and some banana, slightly alcoholic, with a hint of vanilla and a herbal-hoppy medium-bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Draft at the lodge. Pours a medium copper color with a faint malt aroma. Flavor is initially sweet with a mellow hop and caramel malt finish. Decently light body. A little fruity too. Almost an apple or pear flavor hidden in there. Decent IPA that’s a little different from the rest. Not bad.

Enjoyed at gabf 2014. It pours with a pure crystal clear gold body that supports a near white head of foam. The modest aroma is sort of spicy, a bit garlic and with a sliver of citrus hops off in the background. The taste is smooth and somewhat understated where I get citrus tangerine mixed with a bit of spicy dank hoppiness. There’s a mix of flavor and bitter hops where the flavor comes out ahead in this beer. This is a well rounded IPA where the hops are there but don’t beat you over the head making this an insanely drinkable smooth sort of entry level IPA. Solid.
