Drink a beer, save a butterfly!

Silverspot IPA holds a permanent slot in the Pelican lineup with its brilliant gold color and assertively complex hop aroma. Brew Master Darron Welch selected the blend of Sterling, Fuggle and Meridian hops, focusing on herbal, floral, spicy and tangerine-like characters to create this highly drinkable 6% abv English-Style IPA.

Silverspot IPA celebrates the Oregon Silverspot butterfly which once flourished in coastal grasslands from Washington to California. Due to habitat loss, this threatened butterfly is now found only in a handful of protected areas. The Oregon Coast is home to most of these sites including nearby Mt. Hebo and Cascade Head, which can be seen from the patio of the Pelican Pub & Brewery. Oregon Silverspot butterflies depend on a unique ecosystem of coastal grasslands, with caterpillars feeding on violet leaves and butterflies drinking the nectar of flowering plants. A collaborative habitat restoration and reintroduction program is helping to increase this butterfly population. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beer will help fund conservation efforts for the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly.

Pours a slightly cloudy Amber. Aroma of pine and a hint of biscuit. Taste is pine, melting into a biscuity, marmalade malty finish. Medium bitterness. A well balanced English IPA.

Nice floral/spicy hop scents, not the overwhelming pine/citrus of NW Cascade hops, much more subtle. Dark golden with a beige head that leaves nice lacing. Crisp and lightly floral, sweetness balances nice, easy drinking for sure. Nice to know I’m helping an endangered species by drinking good beer.

On tap at Pelican in Tillamook, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma reveals notes piney English hops and biscuity notes. Flavour is similar, with piney English hops, toasted crackery malt and a slight herbal hop tinge. Clean and balanced. Solid English IPA.

Had as part of a flight, enjoyed it, but the glass had that sterilized dishwasher taste which affected flavour and nose.

Cloudy dark gold (poor lighting) with a flimsy white head. Fresh aromas: caramel, resin, grass, dough, cheese, and some alcohol. Decently balanced flavor with a nod to bitter, Finish is more of the same. It’s good.

On tap at the brewery. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma of floral and bitter hops, pale and caramel malts, and dough. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not the best IPA but not awful.

On tap at Yardhouse Linq in Las Vegas. Kind of a dark pour that lightens after a minute. Not the hoppy citrus taste that I read about before I ordered it but it does seems to have a light orange citrus taste to it. Just not hoppy. Some orange peel zest in there as well. Light to medium body. Not bitter.

This is a beer that likely won’t rate high, but damn it’s delicious. Clear dark golden, aroma of grapefruit, vanilla, perfume. Very clean tasting beer, delicious caramel medium bitterness and lightly fruity hops.

Thanks James! Pours a light amber with a tan head. The smell is earthy malt with some citrus. Taste follows smell with grapefruit and dryness on the end. Light+ with average carbonation.
