DATE: September 3, 2016... OCCASION: Penn State kicks off its season hosting Kent State--a beautiful fall day deserves a quality Pennsylvania beer... GLASSWARE: Penn State pilsner... pours a clear gold with moderate effervescence... a thick off-white head settles to suds... bubbles pocket the ring around the glass... not too much to look at... a beautiful metallic hop/bread malt balance erupts... soft flowery hops and a bit of citrus, but the malts are what makes this an alluring fall beer... the palate is smooth, light yet lively, mild at the throat with enough buzz at the teeth... a mild aftertaste that is refreshing, and one that encourages the next sip--outstanding for its style... a pleasant sweetness pervades the experience, with honey, perfume, flower, and dough making for a full flavor profile despite its drinkability... this beer is a great compliment to the day, very light ABV but flavorful and balanced... indeed a medal winner, and one I plan to session throughout the evening... and, let me add, WOW--who is sleeping on this beer? What are helles drinkers expecting? Check Beeradvocate for what’s up...

Draft sample at the source. Clear gold with a white head of foam. Not much aroma, but the taste has sweet bready notes. Light body and moderate carbonation.

Pale gold, slightly hazy, with big bubbles. Nose is combination of malt, hops, and fruit. Medium body. Light aromas and flavors, searching hard for specific notes - medium light tartness, medium light alcohol, very faint cardboard and vinegar aromas. Bitter finish. Refreshing, decent overall.

355ml bottle thanks frank. Clear gold pour with a industrial-looking white head. This smells like a pale lager more than a Munich light lager. It has a sharp herbalness from noble hops, but otherwise it smells bleachy and watery. Maybe almost sarsaparilla. The flavor is undoubtedly all-malt but as if pabst changed thier recipe to be all malt. It is also a bit oxidized. It is not a Munich-style beer, and a mediocre to decent amero pale lager.

This is not an ideal lager. It tastes okay but has a distinct hint of banana and clove phenols that should not be there at all and don’t really work with the earthy bitterness. It’s a bit sweet but not too heavy due to fairly vigorous carbonation. This is not even close to style but I suppose it is fairly drinkable.
