I had this at the Steelers game today. Iíve had it many times, most recently rating it 5/7/01 at 3.3. This is quite a good solid beer. I didnít remember it being as hoppy as it was today. Maybe it was fresh since Heinz Field is a hop skip and a jump from the Penn Brewery. I was reminded of Great Lakesí Dortmunder Gold when I had this, thus Iím increasing my rating. I think I have a new ícommoní (at least in Pittsburgh) favorite beer. Of course it didnít hurt that the Steelers won. I think this beer is *much* better from the tap as compared to the bottle.

Great beer and itís not terribly expensive . ( at least in Pittsburgh ) .
Tastes much better on tap at a bar than the bottled stuff ( which is contract brewed by Jones Brewing in Smithton, PA. ( they make Stoneyís and other crappy swill ) .
I rather drink the small batch of it that Penn brewery makes for their restaurant .
This stuff is kind of restrained tasting. I like a more in your face and aromatic beer .
I have had it at PNC park, the baseball stadium here in Pittsburgh and it is great in that watching-sports kind of context .
Good with German food because of that understated conservative taste .
I buy a case of it here and there for myself and guests to sip on .
The í kaiser pils í that Penn Brewery makes seasonably is much better...ask for it if you go to the Brewery .

Nice rendition. Spicy and aromatic with a decent balance. Crisp and dry and subtly sweet.

Drinkable, not my style, fair malts and some hoppiness, not a bad beer, just doesnít click with me.

I donít really see this as a
Vienna style lager - as does the
previous rater - it certainly seems to
be a pilsner, but it does have its
eccentricities. It has a wonderfully
complex and spicy aroma - more so than
any pilsner Iíve had. But after smelling
it, the first sip was a bit of a disappoinment.
Not much body, and alot less complexity in the
flavor. Iím guessing there may have been some
dry-hopping, but very little hop flavoring.
It finished as a simple and sweet lager (perhaps
causing a tendency to see it as a Vienna style)
that wasnít as refreshing as the Lone Star
that I sampled in the same sitting.

Truly a Vienna Lager! Enjoyed it at Three Rivers Stadium!
