COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Andy and Nick have also been busy creating some special new beers for Penn’s “Brewmaster’s Choice” series for fall. Andy’s harvest rye IPA is slated to debut on October 2. “Our rye IPA will be brewed with a blend of rye and two-row barley Pilsen malts,” says Andy. “This red ale will feature a malty balance with a pronounced hop bitterness and aroma,” he adds. The limited-edition seasonal ale will be available on draft at Penn Brewery and other select bars and restaurants around town.

Bottle shared by Tmoney99 (notes). Pours a deep amber/copper color with a small off white head. The aroma had caramel, spicy rye, light herbal and citrus notes. The flavor has some up front bitterness, hints of grapefruit citrus, spicy rye, toasted malts with a moderate bitterness to the finish.

Reddish-brown color with a white head. The aroma is full of rye. The flavor is a bit different. I get a good dose of spicy rye, but that is accompanied by some toffee and caramel malt, pine and grass. Low bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bomber from barley and hops. Pours a dark copper color with a large white head. A sweet caramel nose. A odd sweet flavor of candy, caramel, rye. Earthy. Ok. Butter maybe.

(22oz bomber) clear bright amber, soapy tan bubbles. Nose of paper, candied citrus, rye, peppery. Taste of rye, spicy, citrus pulp, alcohol. Medium body.

On tap at the bocktown monaca. Very nice lacing. Rather mild yet bitter flavor, much less annoying than other rye beers. You know, they taste so much like an IPA. Not over the top. Rather flat. Big neggy finish. Not real impresses but at least something new from these guys.

Draft at mad mex monroeville. This beer does not play well with others not when it spends all its time playing with itself. Pours brown with an inch of foam. Slight pine on the nose. The faint rye I can detect on the to the does not blend well with all those hops. Pass!

This poured a medium amber color with a white head. Aroma was herbal and spicey hops, light rye and some caramel malt. Flavor was light spicey and herbal, not very juicy or fruity, and some cracker notes. Somewhat boring, but nothing bad.

I’ve been nothing but disappointed with Penn since their reopening and subsequent old man ass whooping, but I couldn’t resist buying this to give me some small connection to the motherland of Steel City. Anyway, hopefully this will change my view. Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Clear, deep orange amber color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is about average and a large ring of lacing is left. 4.0 S: Quite a peculiar, but welcoming nose. Spicy and herbal hops with hints of citrus. The rye opens up as it warms to add the signature "spicy earthiness." Caramel malts and neutral malt sweetness add good balance. Whether from the rye or the hops, it almost seems like there are some pumpkin spices, along the lines of cinnamon and nutmeg, in here. 3.0 T: Despite what the nose suggested, the taste falls flat. The spiciness, the hops, and especially the malts are subdued. Moderate bitterness with just a touch of spicy and earthy hop flavor. The rye gets lost under the bitterness. The malts aren’t as sweet as I thought they would be and the balance is lost. 3.0 M: Medium body. A bit too much carbonation and a bit too chewy, especially for the body. Finally, the finish leaves a drying bitterness. 3.0 D: Again Penn lets me down. They need to stop beating up old men and brewing these experimental disasters and get back to basics - stellar German beer. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-03-2011 00:40:33
