zizzybalubba (125), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA Jun 4, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours a yellowish-orange with a thin white head. Aroma of yeast, banana, and a hint of clove. Very well balanced flavor of banana, bread, and bubblegum. Very refreshing and quite honestly better than expected. This is a solid hefeweizen that I am sure to try more often. joeymacaroni (168), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 2, 2009 pours translucent orange-creamsicle colored with a thick off-white head. nose of heavy tropical fruit...along with the ubiquitous banana and clove, there was lots of pineapple, mango, nectarine. flavor is more tart than I would have expected. Lots of fruit esters, more of the mango and nectarine. long, creamy aftertaste. light bubblegum i like this one a lot. ucusty (1668), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA May 28, 2009 Hazy bright gold pour. Fluffy white head and spotty lace. Clove, banana, and grains on the nose. Similar flavor profile. Light to medium bodied BeerHawk (1050), Huntsville, Alabama, USA May 19, 2009 Bottle. Poured a hazy yellow with a huge fluffy white head that had some lasting. Aromas of clove, banana, citrus, and wheat. The flavor found wheat and tart apple. Light body, tingly carbonation, and a tart aftertaste. WVHouseofBeer (246), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA May 10, 2009 I actually really like this beer, the best brew from Penn IMO. Really good for an American version of the German Hefe. Though DO NOT drop or shake a bottle of this brew --EVER, it will be ruined permanently.
Aroma: Clove, banana, white bread rises immediately.
Appearance: Cloudy, cloudy, cloudy with yeast streaks seen as the bottle empties. Good to see a Hefe that is cloudy --AS THEY SHOULD BE!
Flavor: The real kicker here, the banana and clove really dominate the palate, can be extremely refreshing when new.
Palate: Maybe a bit too much carbonation, as the reason for the "Do not shake" warning I gave.
Overall: The best Penn brew and one of the best American Hefe. If you can get this on tap at the brewpub or wherever, it will be much, much better. A good one. tarheels86 (497), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 21, 2009 330 mL into a weizen. Nice cloudy gold pour with a decent fluffy white head that dissipates quickly and leaves little lacing. Nice yeast aroma with cloves, cinnamon, and a little bubblegum. Taste is smooth, creamy, with faint spice. Not much citrus or banana here. Very crisp finish. Not bad but definitely not Franziskaner. CanIHave4Beers (561), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Mar 21, 2009 Bottle with compliments of CheapDark, Thanks Dennis. Pours a damn cloudy yellow with a medium white head. Aroma is very interesting for this style as it seems to be dominated by a roasty malt character, besides that there is a metallic copper aroma and some very nice citrus notes in the background. My initial reaction was mmmmm delicious, but after a few sips it fails to excite too much. Flavors are dominated by a yeastiness and a (once again nice roasty character) It’s got a great citrus flavor that seems to be the major anchor to the hefe style. The spiciness is very subdued and the banana while present is also in the background.
I must hand it to this one; they’ve done something original with the style, certainly enjoyable. I can’t say I wouldn’t buy this again, but perhaps not on a regular basis.
nearbeer (1695), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 17, 2009 12 oz. Nearly opaque orange-golden with a small, but long-lived creamy head. Nose has pleasant proportions of spicy banana, wheat, and a faint apple-lemon mix. Flavor is less sweet than aroma indicates, with the wheat and hops really playing their part vs. the spicy yeast in this one, especially at the finish. Medium body is fairly smooth and lightly acidic-tingly. Spots of sudsy lace left behind. Pleasant surprise.
