Commercial Description:
Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in GABF.. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

From the bottle, 10/8/2005. Effervescent (large bubbles) with a rusty-copper-tangerine colored body and a bubbly, poorly retained white head. Maybe passable for a pale lager, but certainly not for a supposed German Hefe. Aroma of wet leaves, light metal (brass, copper) and some dry, bland, stale biscuity malts. Weak esters struggle to keep from drowning in all of the water and bland graininess. Flavors of light chalk/crayons, grainy, ricey-like malt flavor with a poor mouthfeel (large, lazy bubbles) and a tremendously weak body. Seems like a crappy pale lager fermented at really high temperatures. Ack. My girlfriend couldnt even drink this and she has far higher a tolerance for garbage beer than I do.

Weakish nose offers a doughy yeastiness dominance with limited soapy banana esters and almost absent hops/malt flavours. It pours light gold, murky and wearing a frothy yet diminishing white head. In mouth, vanilla finds its way through the doughyness, but yogurty, lactic and astringent tartness acts as the supreme authority and plunders its merits. Weak, light bodied thin and grainy demonstration.

Pours a slightly cloudy golden hue with a light white. big-bubbled, head. Aromas of light cinnamon, a little banana, some pepper and some clove in for good measure. Flavors of all the aromas with a light bitterness. There is a lignering sweetness which may be because of an old bottle. Yeast is very pronounced and the brew is wuite refreshing. A little more full-bodied than most german hefe’s.

Very cloudy orange beer that throws up a good fizzy white head but it goes away pretty quick, no lacing. The aroma is very nice banana and citrus, bubblegum. Flavor is excellent. Full and fruity, with orange and spice, and loads of yeasty goodness. This is as good as the best authentic German examples. Impressive.

Absolutely top-notch Weizen. Juicy, with a great balance of fruitiness and clove. I am hard-pressed to think of a more authentic American example of this style. What an easy drinker.

On tap at the Mellow Mushroom in Winter Park, Fl. Sweet bubble gum aroma with a hint of clove. Slightly cloudy, light orange appearance, with not much of a head to speak of. The flavor has some banana notes with some estery qualities. Decently thick mouthfeeln not too carbonated, Very refreshing on a hot Florida summer day.

12 oz bottle obtained in a trade with pjk33 - Thanks Pat! - Pours cloudy orange with a short white carbonated head in my weizen glass constant carbonation rises to the top. Aromas of clove, bannana, yeast, and a touch of spice. Flavor is bananna, clove, a touch of orange peel and a decent spicy finish. On the palate this is light and carbonated decently. Smooth drinking and crisp clean and refreshing. A pretty tasty example of the style..

I first tried this from a variety case. It stood out from the other offerings. Smells of cloves and banana. Nice mouthfeel, almost electric. Nice light orange color. Pours a nice head in a Weiss Bier glass. A very refreshing beer on a hot summer afternoon.
