COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in GABF.. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

Cloudy yellow color with weak white head. Medium sweet and wheat aroma. High carbonation. The flavor is at first sweet then wheat malts and lemon. Nice yeast influence too.

Pours hazy gold with a large white head. Soft clove and banana aroma with a hint of citrus--very nice. The flavor doesn’t exactly fulfill the promises of the aroma, but it’s not bad. The flavors (standard hefe stuff) are good but subdued, and the finish is quick and unimpressive.

Bottle. Pours cloudy orange\golden with a decent sized white head. Aroma of bananas, spices, wheat, and citrus. Flavor is lemon, citrus, bananas, sour, wheat. Not an impressive german hefeweizen.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2006 The aroma smells like urine (yep, that’s right pee), bananas, yeast, spices, malt, and citrus. The appearance is deep cloudy gold with a large head. The taste is really good it has a lot of bananas, coriander, malt, and cloves. The palate is thin but smooth and fitting for a Hefeweizen. Overall I like it a lot; it has a greeat taste. But something needs to be done about the aroma!

Sour and yeasty, very wheaty, as expected, with some generally pleasant maltiness. Slightly crisp and refreshing, but thin-flavored. Some banana esters makes this one a little hard love.

Bottle. This pours a golden colour with a decent head. Scents of banana and citrus on ths nose. This is a cross between an American Wheat and a Hefeweizen. it has the banana flavors, but is not creamy and smooth. Crisp, with some sour undertones (lemon). In comparison to other US attempts, this is very good but in comparison to the style it is slightly better than average. Thanks to wohlfs for the bottle.

Label this a berliner weisse, and I’m approaching the rating differently, but as a self-advertised hefe, this thing is just putrid, so putrid, I can’t even thank doulos for passing it along. The pour was golden-yellow-orange with a decent head (not nearly as rich as a real hefe) and lots of lemon chunky looking sedimentation. Aroma was clovey, not much banana, and lots of lemon citrus. The flavor was lemon citrus, American wheaty funny/funky, and did I mention tart and lactic lemon? Tart and acidic mouthfeel, nasty aftertaste. This thing probably got a bad bottling and pick up some wild bacteria for the bottle conditioning. A terrible hefe.

At the brewery. Unique in that it had a farmhouse aroma and saison taste. Seems to be an accident of he batch according to the bartender yet I liked it. Good yeasty taste and medium body. Did not have creaminess I would expect of the style and left a dry finish.
