COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in GABF.. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

A: Pours a straw yellow color with a thunderous head into my Franziskaner Hefe glass. There is a single stream of bubbles strong as Old Faithful keeping a head around long after the initial fade. After every drink the motion of the glass brings the bubbles and the head back only to die down again. S: Lovely. Strong odor of banana taffy, lemon rind, and bubblegum. Strong yeasty notes as well. A wonderful smelling Weizen. T: This is where this one wins out. Tons of flavor and complexity unknown to most other wheat beers. A banana rush up front with the creaminess of banana crème pie. After the banana fades the bubble gum comes forward until it is over taken by lemon, and then the old time clove bubble gum. It finishes with yeasty tones and more lemon. Sooo Complex. M: So light and bubbly, the definition of effervescent. A wonderful example of this beer style.

Brewed in the USA... Pours a hazy yellow color with a medium foamy white head and nice carbonation. Aroma of banana, yeast and mild cloves. The taste is much of the same with the addition of mild grains. Mouthfeel is medium in body, it’s well balanced, yet something is missing here? Overall, pretty good, but not the best Hefe out there.

Apperance is weak with little to no head over a nicely colored golden liquid. Scent is of strong banana and clove. Taste is much more subdued than the scent, and is nice and refreshing with the same characters as the nose but again, very subtle. Palate is thin-medium bodied and medium high carbonation with a decent coating feeling. Overall a good, easy drinking beer.

12 oz. bottle thanks to zizzybalubba! Very much classic hefe aroma of banana/clove. Flavor is very much the same with a slight tart finish. Pretty true to style but not up there with the top hefes. Not nearly as drinkable as some of the better german hefes, New Glarus, or more recently Sierra Nevada Kellerweis. Lingering sticky on the tongue.

12oz bottle. Hazy golden color. Thin white head. Perfect hefe aroma. Big wheat, lots of bananas and clove. Light bodied. Flavor is lacking character. No true presence of malt. Dry finish. Thirst quenching, but so is water. 28 NOV 08

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours a yellowish-orange with a thin white head. Aroma of yeast, banana, and a hint of clove. Very well balanced flavor of banana, bread, and bubblegum. Very refreshing and quite honestly better than expected. This is a solid hefeweizen that I am sure to try more often.
