COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schwarzbier (shvahrts-beer) is German for "black-beer". Brewed to be a light bodied dark beer with a clean, crisp, refreshing finish. Its well balanced malt character is complimented with a touch of roastiness. Brewed using imported black patent malt and noble hops. Pairs with chunky dark breads, marinated meats such as brisket or German Sauerbraten. Not recommended for cellaring. Serve in a flute or pilsner glass at 45-50deg

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2009 Bottle (22oz). Shared by blankboy with me, garthicus and GregClow. Deep clear ruby with a smallish fizzy-creamy tan head. Oily, roasty malt aroma, hints of light peat and/or smoke, quite nutty. The taste - lovely - smooth and somewhat light, but a terrific balance of dry smoke, light creamy/minty bitterness and tame near-burnt roast malt. Average of body, slick, only mildly carbonated, with a whisper of astringency from the smokiness - only a medium-length finish to this one, but overall a solid, solid effort, very drinkable.

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm, 18 Dec 2008) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dark bread and hints of dried fruit and raisins. Malty, roasted taste with dark bread, chocolate and a dry cocoa bitterness in the finish. Lacking a little bite, but still a nice and well balanced beer.

My bottle (650ml) shared with GregClow, HogTownHarry & garthicus. Pours a very deep ruby-brown with a small diminishing tan head. Aroma of smoked meat, roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Nice creamy, malty and smoky flavour with a light roasty bitter finish. Average to medium bodied. Quite good, I really liked it.

In short: A very hoppy Schwarzbier. Very good.
How: Tap at Vermont Brewers Festival 2008
The look: Black body topped by a small tan ring
In long: Malt and yeast profile is smooth and round reminded me a lot of Czech Republic Tmavys. Roastiness kept to a minimum, light burnt toast flavour, hints of chocolate, raisins, light molasses. But where this one stood out is in the hopping department. Dry grassy noble hops and fruity American style hops. Some lemony touches too. Long bitter finish with a light tartness. Not a very tasty beer but man could I drink pint after pint of this thing. This is an above average Schwarzbier adapted for the hop-loving American. The day of hoppy double cheeseburger is coming.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Light roasty aroma, with some cocoa and a hint of hops. The flavor is on the light side, but well balanced. Nutty roasted malts, with cocoa and some lingering hops. A hint of smoke reveals itself as the beer warms. Pretty good.

(Rating #1835)

Savannah, Ga - Habersham Beverage Warehouse (Habersham Blvd) - 22 oz bottle. Tar-black pour with a thin but long lasting khaki colored head. Earthy aroma with some faint traces of chocolate. rich flavor with some nice chocolate undertones, a bit of coffee and a nice underlying subtle sourness. Traces of licorice as well. Mouthfeel is crisp - about right for the style.

Poured a reddish mahogany color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, nuts, cocoa, smoke, and burnt toast. Taste of chocolate, more roast, caramel malts, smoke, nuts, and dry wood in the finish.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2009 At Vero. thanks Backus for setting this aside. Dark black-brown, semi-clear. Husky aroma. Mellows into a sweeter and finely structured malt body. Excellent level of sweetness. Smooth, with a gorgeous body.

re-rate...totally black with thick tan head. Good-looking brew. Some spice in the aromas. Ginger? Some cola. Very authentic aromas. clean, good. Delicious, Perfect mouthfeel, creamy but light at the same time. The flavors are spot on for the style, not too much roast, not too much chocolate, but has both. Subtle and very good!
