tylerss20 (89), New Hampshire, USA Jun 2, 2008 Very good brew. Pours red brown. So smooth, a bit of sweetness, some dark fruit and spice. Just down the road from me, who knew?
Rastacouere (5283), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Sep 7, 2008 Objectively speaking:
A doppelbock with an American twist, but beautifully integrated, earth-laden and flavourful.
I like:
Interesting concentration and its medium-full body seems smaller than it is. Hard to notice alcohol. Excellent earthy nuances are complex in themselves. Subtle, pleasant and drying noble hops. Never too sweet.
I dislike:
Not much fruit flavours in there whereas this is something I generally enjoy. Its toastiness does not feel as pure as, say, Andechs, but it compensates through a striking balance all throughout and a rich and inviting mouthfeel. MartinT (4345), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 7, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Toasted caramel maltiness develops a lean and approachable mouthfeel for this drinkable and straightforward Doppelbock.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the coppery burgundy.
-A raisiny fruitiness adds depth to the malt profile.
-Light earthy, herbal hops brush the end of each sip.
-This could be a tad heavier in body and more expressive in malt flavor for my tastes in the style, but as is it remains quite pleasant.
-This is not the kind of Doppelbock I want to sip; I prefer it through large gulps, just like any other well-made, crisp lager.
Bottle. argo0 (6176), Washington DC, USA Aug 27, 2008 (1L bottle) Clear mahogany body topped by medium beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, plum, some raisin, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, bittersweet chocolate, some caramel, raisin, light earthy, alcohol. Medium body, some chalk. ryan (1706), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottle from argo0. Clear dark amber body with a small beige head. The nose is malty with caramel, dark fruits and toffee. The flavor is moderately sweet, with raisins, cookie dough, toffee and light roast. Medium/full body is round with moderate carbonation. kmweaver (2015), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 24, 2008 1L bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Pours a slightly hazy, golden-brown color; thin light-tan head with patchy lacing. Basic amounts of caramel and soft dried fruits in the aroma; toasty, clean. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of caramel, dried dark fruits, and apple notes upfront; reasonably tasty, clean doppelbock expression; solid yeastiness and nougat notes throughout. Medium finish: toasty malts, nougat, and caramel; dry and reasonably toasty.
