With mango and piney notes on the nose, this Belgian IPA has a strong citrusy hop bitterness up front that finishes with a dank, resinous flavor you’re looking for in an IPA.

This entry includes I, II, III, and IV thus far.

III...really really enjoyable hop aroma. Just so appealing. That really sat the table for this beer. It has a nice sweet hop taste with that Belgian kick then a late bitterness hit that stuck on mouth. Definitely benifited from a little glass time just chilling. Good. I'd like a steady supply of hoppy saisons and ipa/pales from Tom up there. Mmmmmmm ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and dispensed to a Czech-pils glass showing a clear, orangey gold color, with a frothy layer of off white head foam, and nice cling to the curtains & spots of lacing. The nose was initially, lightly dank, then uplifted with notes of pine, citrus as grapefruit & orange, and mango. The esters continued as the taste provided fair carbonation in a medium body, with moderate earth & rind bitterness that started to weigh a little heavy on the palate toward the finish. Not a lot of Belgian influence, imo, but decently flavorful.

Nice foamy white head. Golden and straw appearance. Lots of carbonation. Nice hop flavor with citrus and spice on the end. A bit of a funk on the aftertaste.

Starts fruity and ends hoppy and bitter. You can really taste the belgium yeasts in this one. Not my style of beer. Pours cloudy orange in color. Had our of a bottle at home. Smells like belgium yeast. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fairly clear, deep copper color with a frothy off-white head. A bit of pine, some floral tones, but heavy on the caramel malt. Bitter, malty, lively carb, somewhat oily, and medium-bodied. Long lingering bitter finish.

355ml bottle. Light golden pour. Quite mild on the ipa front with minerals, some grain, nice spice, and a finishing citrus/pine. It doesn’t go over the op, it is rather subtle, but it is drinkable.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2014 Gold, reddish orange, small head. Smell is rich, earthy, warm citrus. Yeast, matzo, some citrus peel, some butter/toffee. Dry, slightly astringent finish.

12 oz. bottle from Binny’s South Loop location. Cloudy pale straw color with thin head in my snifter. Aroma is mild fruity Belgian yeast and a slightly floral hop undertone, pleasurable. Taste is an extension of the aroma.

The yeast and hops are at a great level of balance. The fruitiness from the yeast hits the tongue upfront with the hops showing a strong presence in the finish. Lightly grassy and mildly lingering pine notes. The body is in the medium range with a yeasty chewiness. No date on the bottle but it’s clear to me this is on the fresh side. Should be killer on draft!

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazed orangish amber with a small white head. Mild film and ring around the glass. Aroma of pine, mango, strong belgian yeast twang. Flavor is strongly bitter with fruit and sweet belgian yeast notes. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Finishes long and bitter. Pretty nice.

This is another great beer from Penrose, who are becoming a local favorite of mine very quickly. This is not that great looking, cloudy orange w/ a small, white head, but it is otherwise pretty much great across the board. It has a strong orange marmalade nose to it and almost seems to have a bit of cinnamon spice around the edges, though it is one of those things where you only kind of almost taste the spice. If they did this w/ actual spices, I commend them for their restraint and if they got the spiciness from the yeast, well, even better. Either way, a real nice subtly spiced citrus nose and I just won’t worry how they got there. This has a fairly clean honey-like malt profile but like the nose this is pretty much all about the interplay between the hops and the yeast. It is nice and dry despite being full bodied. What sweetness is there and a shade of tartness bring out a bit of a lemon quality. It finishes w/ some lingering sugar on the tongue w/ a firm citrus-rind bitterness and some cloves. This is a very well put together beer, a great recipe well executed by some clearly very talented brewers. Definitely, I don’t think anyone in the Chicago area does nearly as well using Belgian yeasts and, frankly, from what I’ve seen so far I am not sure anyone anywhere does.
