Sour mash Belgian dark ale brewed with black currants. Brewed in collaboration with Half Acre Beer Company, Chicago, IL.

bhensonb (11069) - Woodland, California, USA - FEB 26, 2012
Capped 750 from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Aromas of burnt malt, not too burnt, chocolate and berry jam. Med+ body. Flavor is dark berry, chocolate, sourish, dark malt. Took a moment to slide into this, but (except for a peanut butter note that just popped up) this is quite a production. Ends rather sour currant with chocolate and earthy notes.

Strykzone (4931) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - FEB 21, 2012
750. This looks like a porter with a dark hue and avtan head of multi sized bubbles. A fruity and bready nose that also has black currant. It offers complex fruot flavors. Raisins, currants, fruitcake, yeast, and peach. This was tasty and fun to drink.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a deep, dark, cloudy brown with some plum tints and a small tan head. Aroma of toasted malts, tart berries and black currants, sugars, sweet bread, and something that hints at very milky chocolate or milk powder. Flavor of sour black currants, toasted dark malts, chocolate, plums, earth, grapes, and candi sugar. Medium-bodied, with a roasty, tart mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Really different than anything I’ve tried before, and the best black currant beer I’ve ever tried.

Sampled at Urban Chestnuts Wolpertinger - 1st anniversary - Pours dark brown with a rich tan head. The aroma is very malty with lots of toast, some Belgian yeast and that is well balance by the tartness that is brought by the black currants. Medium / thick body that is very smooth until the end when the semi-soft carbonation hits. The flavor starts with dark malt with not much bitterness, dark fruits, sourness from the black currants and a ’big’ taste without any abv tasted, but it has to be there with so much going on. The finish has more fruitiness and sourness. Really nice one here.

beernbourbon (1300) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - FEB 4, 2012
Tap at brewpub. Pour is deep brown with maybe a touch of red and a smallish beige head. Aroma is subdued at first but wakes up a bit as it warms. Light notes of roasted malt, faint nuttiness, and faint tart berry notes. Flavor is slightly tart with hints of roasted malt, light fruit, light peanuts, and a faint saltiness as well. Really pretty subtle flavor all around. Maybe the Vermillion I had before this devastated my taste buds.
