In late January, we held a funky, wild night of a total Brett Takeover here in the tasting room. Along with an entire evening of Brett beers, Brewmaster Phil Wymore and Brewmaster Chase Healy of Prairie Artisan Ales collaborated on a beer. The result of their labor is Dual Artisanship, a hoppy red Saison! Centennial, Simcoe, and Citra combine with a secondary Brett fermentation creatiing a big, tropical juciness followed by a dry, funky finish.

Un biscuits caramélisé couvert de bretts actifs et savonneux. Une version plus grosse, plus grillé et plus amère d’une Orval. Exactement ce que je voulais boire.

Great green apple pear carbonated funk. Love this style, champagne like pear character. Good dry character, somewhat funky and tinge of oak and wood nit much but noticeable. Loved it and will love it.

750 ml bottle from bBinnys South Loop (Chicago, IL). Caught my eye on the shelves. Neate. Pours a well hazed darker golden amber hue, almost a deep honey glow, cakey offwhite head atop stays as a nice layer, good retention, thick with nice lacing and webbing throughout the pour. Aromas are distinct sweet and juicy pineapple, bread and a bit of pie crust. Crusty bread, grainy malts and a touch of funky dryness. Some earthiness, stone fruit and faint honeycrisp sweetness. A bit more apple, funk and dry earthy hops, mellow yeastiness. As it warms, a bit more juicy pineapple, fruit and bretty funk come on stronger. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, a bit fuzzy and dry as that funky brett starts to assert. Lively carbonation, fuzz and cobwebs hit up front. A bit dry, basement with bready malts, a bit of biscuit and crusty bread up front. A touch of bandaid, gentle fruit as a more aggressive funky yeast starts to take hold. A bit floral, herbal and dry. Gentle bitterness, dusty bretty funk as we move on. A bit of pineapple, faint honeycrisp and dry funky cobweb yeast. A gentle kiss of straw, toast like carmelized feel and lingering Belgian yeast. Touches of grapefruit, pear and pineapple linger on as the palate adjusts more to that brett profile. A bit fuzzy, dry and lighter as we finish up. Lingering cobweb, dust, subtle herbal and basement. Earthy, dry, funk. A touch sweeter beneath at times but the brett here develops as it warms, becomes potent with basement, dust and a lotion lieke herbal quality. Some pineapple, gentle fruit character is more juicy up front but further into the one the brett really takes a firm hold for me as opposed to the initial impressions of a firmer malt base, juicy pineapple and a sweeter depth. Dry, funky. Solid stuff if a bit bigger for my own tastes. The backend and finish win me over a bit more.

Bottled 10/2014. Pour has an amber color with a sturdy coating of white head. Aroma has mild tartness, yeasty, some citrus, grapefruit, and a bit of brett. Mouth feel is medium light with mid range carbonation. Flavor brings in some bitterness, caramel, grains, citrus, grapefruit, yeasty, and a fair bit of brett.

[Tap] Dirty orange colored pour with a large amount of head on top. Initial aroma surprised me on the level of hoppiness in this brew. Pine and grapefruit notes come out in the nose along with dry grains and some grass. Flavor picks up the Brett and Saison yeast more with zesty citrus and peppercorn spiciness. Hops lead to a somewhat astringent bitterness when blended with the rest of the flavors in here.

On tap at Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD. Clear, golden orange with a small off-white head and very good lacing. Aroma of caramel, hay, light fruit, hay, and a funky earthiness. Taste of light fruit, hay, caramel, funky earthiness and grass. Medium body and medium carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750, capped. Thanks, S! Pours a cloudy medium gold with a dense and creamy off-white head that falls away. Big tangy sweet bretty nose, showing some basement and some floral and hay notes as well. Not funky yet. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Basement, soft caramel, lemon, and floral notes, but predominantly basementy. Long tangy finish. Very interesting. Would love to have more to age.

I suspect this is going to be a slow rating year for me - life just looks busy for 2015. But, thanks to the wife, I get to kick things off with a surprise growler from Whole Foods. Too bad I didn’t really care for it - can’t blame her at all, I would have picked this one to try out too. Poured what was frankly a rather ugly murky brown, little head faded fast. Aroma was an odd mix of sweat, some horse blanket, citric hop. Flavor was also wildly muddled. The hops seem muted and somehow distorted, there is a strange spicy yeast and phenolic component in all out war with the hops, and then brett comes wandering in at the finish just to make things even more confused. I appreciate the experiment, but none of the flavors came together for me. Yes, this was complex, but complex in the same way a mango kale chocolate smoothie is complex - lot’s of different flavors, but maybe they just weren’t meant to be with each other. Too bad, really wanted to like this.
