Pours a dark brown with garnet highlights. Has a small tan head that settles to a ring and leaves good lacing. Aroma of cocoa with a lactic smell, along with vanilla, coconut, some cinnamon and a bit of the chili pepper. Taste is very similar with the cocoa, cinnamon and peppers blending together nicely. The vanilla and coconut come in with some sweetness and roast and alcohol that isn't overpowering. Finishes semi dry. Mouthfeel is semi slick with a medium/full body and low/moderate carbonation. Nicely blended flavors that compliment each other.

2014 bottle. A dark brown/red with a dark khaki head. Aroma is cookie dough, cinnamon, dark fruits and chocolate. Taste is cocoa, cinnamon, coconut, vanilla and a nice spicy pepper at the end. Alcohol is noticeable as an aftertaste. A soft, pretty thin mouthfeel ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Medium dark cola color with minimal khaki head around the rim. Smells of milk, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, a little coffee and wee bit of the vegetal pepper. Taste is a cinnamon chocolate brownie with cocoa, fig, milk, a bit of charred bitter and spicy hop at the end. The pepper is subtle and well done. Well done and delicious dessert. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

11/2014 version. Wanted to age this one; just couldn’t wait. Aroma is nearly perfect. Not too sweet, not too hoppy. Just good roast (again, not overdone), cocoa/dark chocolate, cinnamon, faint trace of the chili peppers. Kind of smells like a roasted marshmallow. Booze also present in the scent, like bourbon, but this one isn’t barrel aged. Pours out very dark brown with tan foam that has huge bubbles. The head takes forever to dissipate. Taste is strong, bitter up front for a split second but that quickly gives way to the unmistakeable flavor of cinnamon and backed up by the slightly spicy bite of the ancho chili peppers. Who would think to put these flavors together? Major creativity points - I don’t even know if someone else could copy this if they tried. Palate is thick with low carbonation. Coats the mouth but is still a relatively easy drinker. Overall very good; this beer put Perennial on the craft beer map. Pretty impressive for a tiny hipster brewery from South St. Louis.

Many thanks to Michael fot the bottle. 2013 Vintage. Pours a brown, bubbly head, which disappears soon, while yielding a jet black color. Smells of roasted malts, molasses, vanilla, honey, dried berries, cocoa nibs and a gentle amount of coffee. Underneath lies a layer of organic, herbal, slightly hot chilies. Earthy, toasted malts and bakers chocolate build the foundation, with sweeter malts on top of them, including molasses, cane sugar, syrup and a hint of dried dark berries. The uprising sweetness gets balanced by creamy milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, cinnamon and spicy, then peppery, burning, herbal chilies. The chocolate qualities get complimented by a noteable amount of bitter coffee, which got a dry note to it. The taste of this beer in general is extremely versatile, it begins silk and creamy, and while it remains throughout smooth, it gets quite a bit heat to it, resulting from the chilies, acting as a convincing counterpoint to the upwelling sweetness, while accentuating the earthy malts and pleasantly bitter coffee. Has a very long finish, beginning right after the chili bite, along with a coffeish bitterness and an earthy note, as well as a toffee glimpse, while the chili burn warms up the belly. Every single flavor is put outstandingly well into this brew, all components unfold on the palate in an enjoyable way, while none dominates the taste on its own.

Bottle at de Garde, Tillamook. Pours a dark brown black, little bit of dark brown head. Aroma lovely, smoky chiles, cacao, roasted grain character. Body very arch and dry, some spice, but also a slight roasty bitterness and some warming. Complex and lovely, bringing together some of my true favorites.

Super dark black. Loads of nibs and subtle hints of coffee. Thick. Cherry? Really strong.
