Berliner Weisse Wheat Ale with Grapefruit and Mandarin orange. Wolgang von Pampelmuse, captain of the 1952 Berlin men’s slalom squad and noted citrus enthusiast knew the importance of maintaining his vital juices. His strict training regimen incorporated copious amounts of fresh squeezed fruit, even in the offseason. With a nod to Opa Von P., we bring you the namesake beer of Berlin with a bright burst of mandarin and grapefruit.

Draft:Funky fecal, rubber, and lemon zest nose. Cloudy golden, thin head. Very sour, lemon, lime, and grapefruit. Barnyard. Medium body, easy carbonation. Funk seems out of place for the style, but I love the intensity and diversity of citrus notes.

From a recent trade. Lots of grapefruit. And like pure grapefruit juice. Not quite as bitter bit nice and juicy and sweet.

Tap. Pours hazy golden, medium white head, dissipates with decent lacing. Aroma is sour mash, hint of dust, grapefruit. Flavor is light plus tart, white grapefruit, sour mash, hints of salt. Light plus body. Interesting.

Murky yellow without much head or lace. Just a ring of white. Tart aroma, a bit of grapefruit rind. Some dry and tart citrus notes. Lively mouthfeel. Nice beer.

750ml bottle purchased from The Beer Temple (Chicago, IL). Finally hunted this bad boy down. Pours a well hazed golden straw hue, a bit murky with some dulled glow throughout. A bit of gold, harvest and big bright white head atop that stays large and in charge, laces well and retains nicely. Aromas show big pithy and bitter grapefruit. Really juicy, bitter, and lovely grapefruit driven nose shows flashes of lactic tang, lemon and citric, a subtle yogurt and dry bready malts. Flaked wheat, dryness, and earthy appeal. Initial is big and bold, firmly sour and growing quickly in a wave. Cool, pithy and rind driven elements are potent, quick to act, and fresh. Ruby red grapefruit, juice and pulp meet bitter rind oils, pithy fruit. Firm lactic twang strikes, lemony and yogurty, grapefruit and dryness. A potent grapefruit appeal sustains throughout, bitter, pithy, sour and light enough to drink quite a bit of. Backend and finish is dry, sour, lingering twangy and rind driven appeal. I wouldn’t call this complex but the flavor elements are on, potent, a really appealing nose with punchy sourness, dry and light body, a gentle carbonation that strikes enough and a crisp, bready backend that works well too, Very nice. Front end and nose do the most work for me. Tasty, perhaps a bit flabby a times but these flavors just really work for me overall.

On tap at the brewpub. It poured a hazy pale golden color with a white head. The aroma was of citrus, some wheat and grapefruit. The taste was similar to the aroma with more grapefruit, oranges and lemons. Tasty.
